I have been struggling to get my 5th gen iPod to connect to the head unit in my Prius and was hoping someone with experience can help me out.

I have the 5.5 gen iPod video. I upgraded the internal drive to a 256GB SSD recently and wanted to use it with my car. When I plug it in, initially, it is recognized and the iPod name shows up on the screen where the USB connection is. Then, it goes blank as if nothing is connected. Unplugging and reinserting either the USB jack or the dock connector don't reestablish a connection.

I am open to installing new software on my iPod if that would help. If you have experience with this, I would appreciate advice. Thanks!

    iPhone ?

You may be out of luck. The video iPod is pretty old. It might just not be compatible. You could try to upgrade the IOS... but I am pretty certain Apple has stopped supporting and signing any Video iPod's for the current IOS.

Sorry, I don't have any direct experience (with that unit) - but I know how Apple works... and they've long stopped supporting that product. Try to update the IOS, but I'm pretty sure iTunes will tell you there is no update available.

The downloadable PDFs of the manual show a list of compatible iPods it appears to cover most back to their od video ( but the mini)

Well, it says that it supports the iPod Touch first gen - it doesn't. I have to use the Aux port. It still works well, sound is great, the iPod touch can still go on doing his job in the new Gen4 as far as I am concerned. A bit of a mess with cables and all, but a very little price to pay. No integration before with the Gen3 (no USB port), no integration now.

I would make sure you're using an actual Apple 30 pin USB cable. Non-Apple branded cables can sometimes be the source of things not working.

Unfortunately I used an original one.... :(
Mind you the software of the EU head unit is completely different from the USA one, even if they look alike...

Ohhhh, I missed that little detail.

Have you tried just putting all your music on a USB thumb drive? I did that with a SanDisk 32 GB Cruzer Fit USB Flash Drive. It's very small and low profile. I just leave it pulled in all the time.

It's a good idea, but I still have the Aux adapter - i can use that one. I don't need for the time being the lighter adapter there, I can use the one in the rear for my TomTom navi. Which cannot really be charged via the USB port which is likely delivering like 2mA of power - it does stay on, but when I disconnect it, it complains the battery is empty (of the Tomtom is empty). The iPhone seems to be charging ok though. Still it is not (unfortunately!) a 2A USB port :( or even 1A....
I also can stream music with BT directly from my iPhone. Either iTunes music on my phone, or stream it directly with Spotify. It is actually pretty cool :)
