    Kevin, that's great hypermiling.

However, you were almost at empty. The 2016 Prius officially has 11.3 gallon capacity in the fuel tank.
If you ran out of fuel and ran down your battery, you would have to be towed to a Toyota dealer. Then you could plan on leaving the car there for a few days while they order a special charger. It could be a major hassle.

Just warning you in case you aren't familiar with the problem of running out of gas in a Prius.

Second that. Great numbers, but there's no upside to stretching tanks. It's not appreciably improving your mpg (apart from lightening the car slightly), it's not putting more money in your pocket, nothing good comes of it, lol.

I was very anxious about the level of fuel. Not something that I will repeat, thanks for the good advice.

    Geez, that's telling:

@Jim in NC , are you the same driver in both, same kind of driving happening?

As a point of reference, this is my fuelly badge for 123,000 miles in my Generation 2 Touring Prius - same driver and same driving habits.

    A 30% improvement.

    Mendel, yes.

It is an interesting real world comparison of Gen 3 & 4 using
    • Same driver
    • Same climate
    • Same topography
    • Same commute
    • Same leisure/weekend trips
There are a couple things I should add:
    • The small data set for the 2016 includes a long road trip with poor mileage because I was driving home through the mountains and was in a hurry, driving faster than normal
    • The 2016 data is only for spring/summer driving which we all know is better than winter. The 2010 has 6 winters under its belt
Both may cancel each other out though.

I got right at 60 mpg with 535 miles on my first tank fill. I was used to getting maybe 49-50 with my '06, but this is amazing. I have added more pressure to the tires, now 42-40 F-R and am now getting consistently over 60 readings. I love it. That's twice the mileage of my Miata.

Latest fill-up: 527 miles driven. Put in 8.9 gallons. $2.79 per gallon. That comes out to 59.2 MPG.
(The computer indicated 62.7) I drove the entire time in the "Normal" drive mode.

Anything close to, or at 60, is fine with me. I'm happy. And I still had almost 2 bars left on the fuel gauge. The computer indicated I was getting a steady 64 MPG... until it gets down to the last 1or 2 bars. Then it drops off.

It's certainly not 65 mpg like you, Kevin. But I'm extremely happy (compared to the 17 I was getting in my Camry!)

And I run the AC on low, 90% of the time... I keep it at 62 degrees. I guess I'm warm blooded.

Not as good as yours krmcg, but phenomenal none the less. I am very surprised and excited by the numbers I have on my diary with less than two weeks on the dial, and very normal driving, nothing approaching hypermiling like I had to do with my 2006 Insight to get this kind mpg.

I made a little mental note to myself today. I will play it conservative and safe. I will always fuel up after I've driven 500 miles, regardless of how many "bars" I have left on the gauge. There's no rational reason why I would need to try and stretch the mileage out beyond 500.

Call me a party-pooper. :ROFLMAO:

I agree with you. I'm used to refueling when I get down to 1/4 tank coming from a diesel, and needing to ensure I could find diesel fuel at a reasonable price. Of course now every station has my fuel and it's cheaper to boot

Good conventional wisdom, jb. I did the same in the past. Never let my vehicles get below 1/4 tank. I think I will just continue that practice with my Prius. When I refueled yesterday, the distance-to-empty number was at about 114? (Plus a little reserve beyond that.) Good enough. ;)

I'm getting 52 mpg with mostly highway driving. Much better than gen 2 and 3.

    Average speed 65mph.

In the city it's more like 63.

Just got our 2016 Prius last weekend and I am seriously loving the mpg!! We are still learning how to drive it efficiently, but are averaging high 50s. Today I got stuck in some freeway traffic, which only helped increase the trip average to 64.6! No fancy tricks just regular driving. Amazing!

I'm hooked! Will definitely be hard to buy another gasoline-only vehicle!
