OK - I was in trouble yesterday. We had called at my office when it was closed for me to drop something off, so I left my other half in the car, got out and got the stuff out of the boot (trunk), and headed for the door. As I walked away the car locked with my wife in the car. Odd I though, and unlocked it with the keyfob, whilst giving a <shrug> "must have clicked it in my pocket".

Went into the office was in five minutes or so, and when I came back out, all of a sudden the car alarm started going off. Apparently as I'd gone in, the lock/alarm had set again and my wife had been trapped in the car frozen, unable to move, for fear of setting the car alarm off the whole time I'd been in the office. She was slightly less than happy! lol :ROFLMAO::D

So now I'm confused, as I've never noticed it lock automatically before when I've just got out of the drivers side... but then maybe I've just didn't realise. I did test it again with the boot, and lo and behold, after closing the boot, the locks did set as I walked away from the car.

I'll need to try to decipher the manual I think, but does anyone know how to get it not to lock, when you're leaving someone in the car like that?

Check page 674 of the Manual section 8.2 "Customization", paragraph "Smart entry & start system and wireless remote control (→P. 181, 191)":

"Time elapsed before the automatic door lock function is activated if a door is not opened after being unlocked"

by default 30 secs - can be changed up to 120secs. It cannot be set to off.
Maybe that is the culprit. It not, it might also have to do with the alarm.

PS: though it is sometimes a "drag" if somebody (I know ;) ) stays in the car, I always leave the keys with them.

Yeah - I saw that and at first I thought that may have been what happened (I've seen that in action when washing the car - sometimes it triggers the door lock, but locks itself again shortly afterwards when you don't open a door), but then I tried it again when we got to the next car park.

We parked the car, all got out, and then I opened and closed the boot. I didn't lock any of the doors at any time. As we walked away from the car I watched and it locked itself (wing mirrors folded away etc). I now need to try it again with the drivers door only - maybe it's to do with opening/closing the boot...

Did you press Stop button before you got out of the car? A possible scenario could be:
    1. You pressed stop
    2. You inadvertently locked the car (something pressing on the fob in your pocket)
    3. You clicked the unlock function to unlock the car
    4. Because no door was opened within 30 seconds, the car relocked itself.
    Possible?

That or really or the alarm changes the locking behavior of the car. Did they give you any additional documentation for it?

Yeah - that's what I thought, but as above, I tried it again when parking at the car park, and never locked any doors, but after everyone getting out and then me opening and closing the boot, it locked itself as we walked away from the car.

Nothing that I can see, other than the references in the manual to how it works...

Not sure...owner's manual reading may be the answer then testing in the driveway.

Yet, the boot opening "button" rubber. There is also a rubber lock button right next to it yes?. Just maybe you touched that too upon closing?

    Good luck.

PS Joke...locking your wife in the car, can have benefits!

My Three model doesn't lock itself.

I guess I forgot to lock it one morning, and when I returned 45 minutes later it was still unlocked.

Not sure the US cars have this. I have to lock my cars all the time.

Yeah - well that's the thing - the other day I came out to the garage and found the car wasn't locked (must have fogotten to lock it). Which makes me think it's got something to do with opening/closing the boot... further investigation tonight I think.

The "settings" on the touch screen has a few things you can change with the locks. I wonder if I turned the auto-lock feature off?

Well it did keep her from messing with any of the buttons... ;)

UK Prius. Each local importer specifies what equipment they want. Your car is obviously different than the US Prius, wrt "options".

    RTFM for sure. ;)

Yeah - I've been through searching it online - it doesn't seem to mention anything specific like this though. The only mention of doors locking automatically seems to be if they are unlocked but no door is opened, they'll then lock again after 30 seconds (which it does). But it is over 700 pages long so I may still be missing something...

I went through the settings again. It says... Automatic Door Locks: On/Off. Mine is "On" but my doors still don't lock automatically after getting out of the car. (I waited for a full minute.)

There is another setting. Maybe the "Automatic Door Lock" is for this: If you use the remote (Fob) to unlock your car, but you don't get in, the doors will re-lock themselves after 30 seconds, 120 seconds, etc. The time is adjustable.

You can also set all doors to lock when you shift into "D" ... And all doors to unlock when you hit the "P" button. But you guys already knew that. :)

I'm convinced that's what's happening here, and it's been mentioned up the page a few more times. If the car's locked, then you unlock with the fob but don't touch anything, they relock in a bit.

If you've got the lock/unlock with touch, never use the fob, I guess you avoid these shenanigans, for the most part.

    I got another issue.

About 12 times, I have gotten out of the car, and forgot to turn off the Power button! Thankfully, there's that "beep" "beep" to wake my a** up! I also wish the horn would honk.

My Cmax does that and I wished I had the option for warning beeps. Why? Because I frequently get out while leaving the car and A/C on for my passengers during warm weather (much of the year) and although I live in a fairly safe area, I don't like broadcasting far and wide the fact that my car is still on and unlocked as I walk away. So, I don't completely shut my door as a work-around but that is a minor PITA and not 100% effective. Grass is always greener....... LOL
