its rare that you can visually assess the remaining effectiveness of the filter. very fine particulates can clog it, reducing air flow which reduces the effectiveness of the HVAC

Good point. Maybe I should cave and change, D.O. for engine filter.

I checked mine. It was a little dirty, so I blew out the debris with compressed air. Then dunked it in a bucket of water with capful of Woolite detergent. Rinsed, then blew it dry with compressed air.

    Looked like new.

    Re-installed.

The dealer wanted to do it on the last service but I'm glad I looked here first. I'm normally a guy who has a dealer or mechanic do just about everything on a car but this task was just way too easy to pay someone else to do it. $18.99 for the Fram Fresh Breeze at Pep Boys, less than 5 minutes of my time with no tools needed and it was done.

The old filter had picked up a lot of leaves and dirt since it was changed 13,000 miles ago but I'll try to clean it up and then I can just rotate filters as needed for the next few years.

One question: The piston in the glove compartment assembly was missing. The glove box doesn't rattle or seem to have any negatives without it. Is it really necessary to replace it or am I okay without it?

…I've noticed in my 2009 Gen II, that sometimes the "piston" retainer moves to a position so that it's difficult to see, are you sure that yours isn't just playing "hide & seek"??

I looked with a flashlight and felt around for it and didn't find it. I'll check again later this morning. Whether I find it or not, is it really necessary?

Once the glove box is latched in position, not really, it;s function is to prevent the box from dropping too far when unlatched.

With all the different storage areas in the car I rarely open it anyway. If it's not there I won't sweat looking to replace it.

    Thank you for the reply.

Without that piston the box flops open with no damping?

That's why I was asking. When I've opened mine the box rests in a normal "open" position, resting on the top clips (the ones that have to be pushed towards the center to remove the box entirely). I don't know that the piston makes any difference in glovebox operation. I do see that if you're not careful the piston will keep the box from dropping on your toes while detaching it.

Does it it drop open with no damping then? I guess it would.

No damping but we usually don't let the box just flop open anyway. We usually ease it open to avoid that issue.

It is not necessary if you hold on to the door and let it own slowly when you open it.

First time I changed mine on a Gen 2 I broke something. Can't remember what it was but never fixed it.
