... of where we stand in this world (or forum).

When one spends a lot of time engaged in something, it's easy to have a sense of ownership.

I'd like to thank @TonyPSchaefer for the reminder that's not the case.

    Take care all,

    Steve

There is only one person who owns Priuschat and that is Danny. The rest of us are guests in his playground.

Back in 2005, when there were maybe a couple thousand members, Danny and the few Moderators had a lengthy discussion of our vision of what Priuschat could become. What it should be. After a whole bunch of "it should be this" and "it must not become that" we settled on a relatively simple concept: Priuschat should be a place where your neighbor, coworker, or mother would feel comfortable and welcomed. Though we were just talking hypothetically, as time went on literally our neighbors, coworkers and parents have bought Prii and have joined Priuschat. In my case, one neighbor, multiple coworkers, and mother-in-law. Since the internet allows a level of privacy and misdirection, for all we know, every member might be someone we know in real life. Thanks to multiple hybrid-related events around the U.S., I can proudly say that I do know some of you in real life.

Tons and tons and gobs of credit goes to the Priuschat membership. The Prius community is a unique group of people. Always helpful in their own way. Oh sure, we all have our bad days, which get compounded when someone asks a question that has already been answered several times or something that is literally in bold in the manual. (#RTFM) But my point here is that the Priuschat family is, for the most part, self-regulating and that's a beautiful thing to witness. Sometimes a topic will cause people to get all wound up and a wicked debate/argument will erupt. Even so, almost without fault, the argument stays on topic and personal attacks are shunned.

Over the last decade, Priuschat has been spammed, group-attacked, and tolerated individuals who quite frankly just went off the handle. There have been nights when we have stayed up almost all night disabling new accounts as quickly as they were created because they were being initiated by another car forum who thought it would be funny to wreak some havoc with the Prius owners. One user had a beef with one of the Moderators and (thanks to his IT position and access to limitless registration email addresses) was generating new accounts just to mock him. Someone once decided to not only leave Priuschat but delete every post he ever wrote (that doesn't sound like much until you consider quoted replies and gaps in conversations).

All those things are just minor blips compared to the great people who come to Priuschat daily. You are who make Priuschat great. And the reason why I always say that if given the chance, I'll gladly buy a round. And bill Danny of course.

    "playground"

    "community"

    Which is it?

A playground exists because someone desires it.

Communities exist and thrive because the members have a sense of ownership in that community. They protect it. They contribute to it to make it something greater than it was.

You reminded me that it's a playground first, community second. I'm not interested in being a contributor to someone's playground, particularly if it generates even a penny of revenue (I count 4 ads per page, every page).

And now there's two, but I decided to leave a handful for one reason or another. I was surprised in the handful of hours it took to undo literally hundreds of hours of previous contributions across 1100+ posts.

Had you engaged me in a dialogue where a learning opportunity could play out, my decision would have been completely different. You describe how things generally work themselves out, yet you swept in and refused to allow that process to play out. Your deletion of my subsequent comments and then the deletion of your own original knee-jerk post just goes to show that in 12 years, your skill as a moderator still needs a lot of work.

    Enjoy your playground.

To the members of the community that I imagined in my head, good luck. I value many of you as individuals, and I wish you all the best.

This conversation eerily sounds personal, and maybe I shouldn't get involved, but I gotta call it as I see it. Without further ado:
wrong. playgrounds exist because of community. they bring community together. when was the last time you saw a playground in the middle of nowhere, and without a community's help? the very notion is counter-intuitive.
look, i'm new here, but I see that you have contributed much of your knowledge and time to PC. if PC has regular pledge drives (like PBS) to pay for its related costs, I have clearly missed it--I've seen no indication of that in my short time here. Therefore, i think you're getting bent out of shape over something that is really a blessing: a community that you have enjoyed, hoping to make ends meet, in order to get by in the age of entitlement. Everybody wants something for nothing.

You could 'cheat the system' and use ad-block. but you're saving yourself at the expense of the forum, paid for merely displaying the ad. everybody hates advertising, but few step up to relieve the cost of providing service. until then, you better get used to seeing ads, because I got news for ya, they aren't going anywhere.

I hope I'm not completely out of context, here. If I am, please let me know. I would regret having judged hastily.

On a pc with Internet explorer as my browser I HAVE to "cheat" the system with AdBlock, otherwise this site locks my browser. This begs the question: are advertisers getting their money's worth, if a fair number of visitors HAVE to block ads?

Steve, so sorry to see you leave this forum.

I started following this forum last December to learn more about my "new to me" Prius. In a short time I discovered your many posts and was very impressed with the on-point information you provided. While there are a number of members of the forum that provide helpful information, one of the main reasons I come here is to read your informative posts. I am sure you spent many, many hours of your personal time freely helping scores of Prius owners over the years with technical problems that most of us don't understand or have the ability to help.

Thank you for all of your contributions to this community. I respect your reasons for leaving and can't understand why (or need to know why) the forum moderators could let you slip away. However, I know I, for one, now have much less of a reason to regularly visit this forum.

Take care in all of your future endeavors.

Could you provide me with evidence that ad-blocking is necessary for a fair number of (PC) site visitors in order to use the site?

Its my guess that site operators go to lengths to ensure their website is usable.

Some malware injects ads onto every page visited, no matter the site, even Google's famously clean front page. They can potentially break sites that are otherwise in perfect working order.

I agree that PC does suffer from reliability (database) issues not related to the varying client-side environments. I'm pretty good about keeping my devices pristine and free of malware.

Is there any way we can get a little context for this exchange? I'm lost.

I wondered too, when I saw the OP. I still don't know.

All I know is, as much as he and his undeniably informative posts will be missed by some members, his final posts remind me that everyone, and everything, is expendable. Good people come, good people go, and life goes on.

Yeah. Then again, something tells me my belief about it would be the same.

Once, a neighbor told me that my cat that got out was hit by a car. I didn't need to identify the body to know my cat wasn't coming back.

it's the only way to understand the context, but it doesn't change anything. some people are easily offended. good people, bad people, sheeple are people.

I actually searched after reading OP, found nothing relevant, figured it didn't really matter anyway because OP sounded, like I said, eerily personal and was more an emotional response to something
