Any competent non-dealer of your choice should be able to handle that, although some might hesitate if they haven't done one before and don't know how easy it is. Just be sure they use the proper fluid, Toyota WS.

The coolant "flush" is not bad, maybe only the engine circuit, or both??

The transaxle fluid change is at least $50 too high, I wonder if they're actually conversant in Prius change??

$74 for cabin filter? Ouch, I'd just check it out myself. You just need to get the glove box off.

Fuel economy maximizer? No idea, seems an overpriced license to extract $.

judging from all other overpriced items, I'd say the "Fuel economy maximizer" is another overpriced gimmick you can do yourself. I mean you can pump up the tire pressure yourself and gain 3mpg. Grill blocking during winter will recover another 2-3mpg from without grill blocking.

I bought 5 quarts of Toyota ATF and took it to my mechanic. I told him it's easy to replace the tranny fluid, just siphon out the old fluid and put in the new fluid. You don't even need to jack up the car. He did it the right way and jack up the car and drained the fluid. He charged me $20 for the labor. Shops charge way more for labeling the procedure. Unscrew the drain plug and let the fluid out completely. Rescrew the drain plug with new washer. Put in new fluid and check the level. 30 minutes tops. Call it a transmission service and it's $119.99. Come to think of it, he charged me $20 for almost everything type of maintenance I threw at him.

He's very honest. When he couldn't do the work due to work related injuries (he owns the shop), he'll tell me where to go and how much to expect to pay and also tells me what would be considered killer deal.

Where in CA are you? Sounds like a fantastic mechanic. Been back in the north Bay Area of CA for 2 years and still looking for a good one.

Just changed the air filter and cabin filter. The air filter was somewhat dirty but the cabin filter was in terrible shape. Completely black and with holes in it. Cost of both filters was $35, so that's $77 saved :)

How much tranny fluid should I budget for? I seem to remember reading 3 quarts somewhere, is that correct. My local lambstire charges $57.50 (30 mins labour) + cost of fluid. How much should I be paying for the fluid? Should I buy it from toyota?

I've got a vacation coming up and I'll be driving from Austin to southern Colorado (about 900 miles each way IIRC). I'll get the tranny fluid done next week, check tire pressures but is there anything else I should be looking at for this long journey?

Also, can I go to a garage and ask them to check the coolant and brake fluids for me? Maybe I could ask Lambs to do this whilst they are doing the transmission fluid. Considering the state of the cabin air filter, I am concerned that the other fluids really do need changing. I know you lovely people have told me that they shouldn't but I wouldn't mind a 2nd opinion.

It's a v so I'm not quite sure, likely per regular Prius? With that vehicle 4 quarts is more than sufficient. You refill with the car raised and level, and stop when it starts coming back out, which typically takes about 3.5 qts.

Use TOYOTA ATF WS, don't be talked into something else.

    Whoa!

just talked to another stealership to the north of where I live (Round Rock) to get price for the transmission fluid drain and fill. She said "your vehicle doesn't have drain and fill, only flush" and the cost....$375. oh dear, it just gets worse. Are there no reliable dealers?

just calling a few local garages that my neighbors have recommended.

Just to confirm, my prius has a CVT? One place just said they don't do them because they don't have the necessary adaptors.

It's not that complicated to service the Prius transmission.

    Thanks for that.

One of the recommended places were absolutely ok with doing the transmission fluid. They even knew that they would have to get in the Toyota WS fluid. Considering the number of prius around my neighbourhood it's been fairly tricky to find a non-dealership place that can look after them.

There are loads and loads around me! At least 4 of us have Prius V in the streets adjacent to me.

One of the local Austin "chains" lambstire, actually said that they can't do the transmission fluid on a 2014 car because it's too new and they don't have the necessary adjusters.......

Never mind, 4 of my neighbours have recommended the place I'm going to, so it looks like it will all end well. He quoted $95 to drain and fill the transmission including the toyota ws fluid.
