I'm new, so hello folks. I'm in the market for a 2016 Prius. Trying to hold out a few more months, so I'm able to shop around. Because of lower than expected sales figures, it seems like dealers would be willing to compromise on price to make some sales. I've seen ads (online) talking about clearance sales. Does anyone have a feel for what clearance really means? Bottom line: I'm hoping to get a good deal on a 4 with ATP. Are the prices significantly lower? I'm assuming the longer I wait, the lower the price might go. Trying to think all this through. Thanks in advance. Mitch

welcome! clearance sale simply means moving old product to make room on the lot for the newer models.
since gen 4 is new, it likely won't apply. dealers are already negotiating fairly dramatically, and no one can predict the future.
so i would bone up on model knowledge, look over the many pricing threads here, and go out and make the best deal you can. all the best!(y)

Hey Bisco, thanks so much! I wasn't clear earlier. I know what a clearance sale is, but want to know if Toyota dealers are really cutting prices. Thanks again!

The main pressure on price for the Prius is the price of gasoline. If gas continues to be cheap, the Prius line will be cheaper too. If gas goes up in price the price pressure on the Prius evaporates.

When I purchased the dealers had quite a few of the white seats and dash. They wanted to make a deal, but I didn't like it.

I got my Prius on clearance in October. As far as I can tell, it was a color no one wanted as same trim models in other colors were selling for a lot more at the same dealer. My particular car had been sitting on the lot since August according to the EV ratio screen so it had been on the dealer lot for almost 90 days and had 49 test driven miles on it. All high numbers that didn't matter to me but probably motivated the dealer to discount. Clearance for my car was a few hundred $ from other same trim models. Or $29k from $33k MSRP.

They were going for a lot less towards the new year. In other words, if you're not picky about color and trim your best deal will be all the way up to March of 2017.

    Mitch,

It depends on a few factors:
How is Prius' selling in your area? Gas prices?
Are your able to pay cash for a quick purchase?
Are you willing to buy a color that is not popular?
Are you willing to wait for 2017s coming in to buy a 2016?
They say buy at the end of the month, when quotas need to
    be met.
There will be others waiting to buy the same vehicle you
are considering, also looking for a discount, so you need to act fast.
I waited 3 months for mine! No discount, since my dealer
covers the whole Island. Full MSRP. It is what it is.
    Good luck!
You will be happy with your 2016!

Most of the clearance sales now are for models that turn over on, or close to, the common Detroit model year calendar. The Prius has not fit that calendar ever since I've been a member here.

We'll have the Labor Day sale then the Thanksgiving/Black Friday sale followed by the Year End Clearance Sale for the leftovers. I don't expect gas prices to be a factor as they most likely aren't going to rise dramatically. Keep in mind that we are only one earthquake away from the Everything Japanese Shortage.

I miss many opportunities waiting for a price which isn't offered.
