Check hybrid system message

    I cleaned out hybrid battery cooling fan today, not too bad after 160K . However, as I test drove prius the Triangle of death and "Check Hybrid System" message pops up.
    Drove 13 miles back home, battery charged good. No power consumption data given on hud. Rechecked fan connection and looked over area. All looked good. I dont think ICE was running during drive home. Tested 12 volt=good. Disconnected 12 volt and orange plug. Reconnected. System reboots and seems Ice goes through warm up. Even put in power mode and it roars. Scratching head on this. Coincedence or maybe I should have disconnected 12volt before disconnecting cooling fan?

    You don't need to disconnect the 12V battery to unplug the fan (as long as ignition is off). Were you able to check the trouble codes? 160k is enough miles that is could be the battery, but hard to know without DTC info.

    yes unplug the 12V battery next time otherwise you will get dtc code when you unplug the traction battery but if you forget just power on and off the car 3 times and it should reset

    All the snap-on readers are at shop, unfortunately. The battery charges well and moves up and down as needed. discharges to 2 bars then fills back to near top. and runs prius at a decent level. Ice kicks in when needed and goes thru warm up normally. Ive peeked into inverter resouvoir and noticed the movement of pumping fluid. The level has not lowered. Was thinking about measuring hybrid batttery modules...

    Im really hoping thats it. So simple I shouldve done it. It passed my mind but not! Pri are so tempermental at times. So when I disconnect 12v and hybrid batt it erases all codes?

    Really hope thats all there was to it. I wasnt thinking straight in this heat! When I unplug 12v and hybrid batt all codes are erased?

    Can I test modules in the car after pulling plug? I know Ill need to bench battery to replace weak modules.

    Did you disconnect the fan, take it right out? Maybe it's not reconnected properly, not running? If you have a ScanGauge you can monitor fan speed (with an XGauge programmed in). Assuming not, just recheck the fan connections?

    FWIW, I've cleaned our fan a couple of times, without fully removing it or disconnecting electrically.

    The Check Hybrid System message is very generic and could be something as simple as an unexpected ground detected in one of the components of the hybrid system. Since you disconnected the traction battery and fan, etc. I wouldn't worry about it, especially if everything seems to be working fine, and the message doesn't come back.

    Keeping fingers crossed on that...still want to check hybrid battery modules to seeif a couple are bad or worse...leaking! I think I saw moisture around batt end while doing fan????

    Awesome, ill look into it.seen a guy explaining reason for loading the modules online...very important! By the way, which module was bad? (Biggest drop?)

    Went 28 mi around town...50.3 mpg without really trying. Oil consumption? not even! Still a lil concerned bout yesterdays warning. Going on vacation this week and I decided to take FJ CRUISER to play it safe. going to burn more dino for sure! Ill put prius on techstream next week.
    Will codes still be there?

    Ive been Looking on youtube vids about hybrid battery module replacement and I saw where a white tube connects to the two drain tubes running across the top of all modules to collect/control gases? and Im thinking thats where the moisture is from. Maybe no module is leaking? I set a rag there to see if its battery acid...if it eats rag...

    I disconnected 12volt and pulled traction battery plug in attempt to remove warning message. Im wondering if code/codes will be stored whenever that message apppears? And if code/codes would still be there after disconnecting batteries?

    Codes generally clear when you disconnect the 12 volt. It is like a master reset... Not always, but that is pretty much the gist of it.
