My son took my Prius to drive to his National Guard base and the Prius started to make a dragging noise.

What is this and what can he do?

Remove it or bend it out of the way. Then jack it up and have that part remove and replaced.

That's the hanger for the resonator, looks like it has bent but still attached and the welds look intact. A quick check of Rock Auto shows the resonator only available with the catalytic converter as a single part, at several hundred dollars, but there's no reason to replace here. My recommendation is bend it up and back into position as well as you can; the rod part with the rubber hanger should point forward. Then replace the rubber hanger/insulator if that's torn (it probably is, they're $4-5). Good luck!

the question you might rather want to ask your son is what happened before it started to make a dragging noise..../ ;)

Looks like whatever he found, it left a mark:eek:.

Your boys appear to keep you busy:). Hopefully the Prius is only the hanger and nothing further.

    Good luck!

A good item to add to the subfloor tray is some wire, stiff baling wire or similar.

on a serious note, do inspect the button and see if anything else is damaged. (y)

I told him to bend it up but he didn't want to get dirty so I told him he could pay for the tow and repairs if he hits something on the way home.

Well I know you guys are wondering how he made out. Well he made it home but pulling into the driveway he hit a rise and bent it near vertical.

I could not bend it by hand and so I put a pipe on it. Got it about 80% of the way when I heard a crack. And a couple more wiggles and it popped right off. But I was able to fab up a substitute for it and after a little grinding and drilling, I got er dun! :)

Toyota's bolt longevity isn't too impressive:

Funny how some stuff rust so bad and other things don't rust at all.

    Is that a seat bolt?

Was there any other damage to the undercarriage or explanation provided to your additional work? Or did the road "come out of nowhere and bite them"?

The only thing I see is the bottom of the bumper cover was hit again.

No obvious scrapes any place else. That mount is tucked up there a way. Can't figure out how it could snag without any other damage
