TDI convert

Been mildly eyeing the used car market in my area.

The interesting thing to me, is I think used Volkswagens are a good purchase right now.

You have to be willing to get past the fact that you own a vehicle from a company that was allegedly overtly willing to defraud the public and misrepresent their vehicles. BUT....if you turn an intellectual and emotional blind eye to that reality? (Hard Pill To Swallow) Then at least in my area, some very nice Volkswagens are selling for far, far less than their Pre-Scandal cost.

I always have liked Volkswagens.....it's nearly tempting to me to buy low. Before the scandal, I think Volkswagen had a reputation on a par, or even possibly exceeding that of Toyota or Honda as far as fit, finish and build quality.
Assuming the only problem, is that the emissions might not be as clean as originally reported...maybe I could live with that?

No...no...probably not.

But I do think Volkswagen produced some nice vehicles.
They just evidently weren't "quite" as nice as they lead people to believe.

 

Coming from a TDI to a Prius, you must be really missing the torque from the diesel?

It's probably a good idea to get rid of the TDI before the high pressure fuel pump fails. It used to be a relatively common high ticket repair item when the cars went out of warranty.

PS- that's amazing $4000 employer discount! Imagine if you lived in DC or lesser extent MD you get Fed+state+employer incentives, and you would not have to pay VA annual car taxes. You'd be $10000 ahead with the Sonata.

This is what I am saying about VA, our car tax promotes buying used car vs. newer greener car. In your case you went "green" with a used Prius, but the state and dealer lost out on a new car sale.

Good luck with the Prius! It's hard to get as much cargo space as a Gen3 Prius has. Really tops there unless you go up to v wagon.

 

I'm from a tdi also. I had a 2002 sedan, but quickly realized I needed more room.
I bought a 2003 jetta wagon, drove it for ten years and about 235,000 miles.
I sold it in 2013, bought a 2013 sportwagon.
I never was I love with the 2013 like I was with the 03.
The 03 was manual, I liked it much better than the 13 dsg. Also, the 03 had real leather.. I never liked the fake leather in the 13.
The final straw was the emissions scandal. I was po'd at vw.
Traded in the 13 on a 2015 prius v. I love the v, my dogs have never had such a large vehicle.

It's all relative, TDI has HPFP, and hybrids have high voltage traction battery and inverter to worry about when they're out of warranty.
