Tesla just announced the range of the model s will increase from 300 miles to a maximum of 315 miles - which just coincidentally - ends up ripping-away Toyota's alt fuel preferred hydrogen distance bragging rights . . . .
Even more Ludicrous: Elon Musk says Tesla now has the world's fastest production car - LA Times
Yea - nevermind they're dumping the 0-60mph time too, down from 2.8 seconds to 2.5 seconds. This comes from tesla's new 100kWh pack rumored & written about in PC's ev sub forum not too long ago.

Well the thing is (from the link) the increased business that this "latest & greatest" feature brings, is more cash - that will be used for more Model 3 R&D. So, there! You're getting your wish!

Uh, not yet for me. Living in a 'fly-over,' the charging infrastructure is not there. IMHO a range extender makes more sense if we're going to see them in rural area . . . with tow receiver and pickup bed.

Plus Tesla appears to use the same pack between models. So when the $30k 200 mile BEV model arrives, tesla will already be making packs for the $35k 300 mile version.;)

how many miles will an L2 put in my empty bolt in 12 hours? likely way more than i will require in 99.9% of my typical driving.

I've got my $1000 deposit on their $35K, 215 mile EV the model 3. I expect that the new P100D battery's cells is part of the effort for that car. I still expect to get it in less than 2 years I'll end up paying around $45K with options but get it in time for the $7500 tax break.

Pretty cool that the only cars that accelerate faster are hybrids the limited production la ferrari and phev porsche 918. Both cost over $1M used

Deposits are refundable, and Musk really wants the 3 and the Y and the new roadster and a truck. Lots of technical challenges, but the key cost item is gigafactory, which appears to be ready in about a year.

i was hyperbolating, but to be honest, i just want a 30k 200 mile ev. i don't care how fast it accelerates.

    actually, I got a notice quite some time to go to the Grand Opening, which took place last month - quite a bit ahead of schedule;
Tesla sends out ‘Gigafactory Grand Opening’ invites: test drives, factory tours and remarks are scheduled | Electrek
I know the media would have gone ape running it up the flag if it didn't happen, so I'm guessing it did? Resuming presuming Tesla is is now manufacturing their own batteries in house would certainly mean they can cut costs significantly - probably even lower than the Uber low price that Chevy Volt gets .
must have never taken a pasenger filled '59 VW bus up to the mountains.

If I were going to buy a BEV with the current Tesla charging infrastructure, it would need a range of about 900 miles.

Based on Musk's sequential Model S PRs, the end state is a supersonic S (0 to 1000 fps at 100 ft) with a range of 1000 km (except with supersonic mode enabled), that still provokes range anxiety (awaiting charge infrastructure to be built 'soon') and that still loses prodigious amounts of cash per unit delivered. But stock price won't suffer, despite big gulp of SolarCity debt and negative cash flows, thanks to the same folks who bought sock puppet dot.com stocks in 1999...

Yes factory is open and producing cells. The haters (people that blog after losing lots of money betting against tesla) point out that construction was slow then rushed. Of course it was. They were figuring out the chemistry and equipment, once they got that down they sped it up, and now lithium cells are being produced in both michigan (LG chem) and Nevada (tesla/panasonic).

Factory is no were close to ready for the model 3, but the progress makes it look like it will be in a year. They need to validate the manufacturing process and speed it up, then add more equipment. Think of it as development expense, but ... unlike buying cells from japan, this is going towards less expensive battery packs optimized for these cars. I'm sure tesla is also listening to lg and samsung, and if they come up with something better they will license and try to build those cells instead.

You are not part of the target. tesla wants to ramp quickly to 500,000 bevs world wide versus a 17 million vehicle market in the US. The long haulers are better suited to hybrids, phevs, and diesels depending on load, vehicle type, and mileage.

Plan was always to build the best sports sedan and to use it to fund a higher volume vehicle (the model 3, and now also model y CUV based on model 3 platform).

The P100D model S can be configured to 7 seats and is the fastest accelerating production vehicle (la ferrari and porsche 918 were limited production, and are no longer being made). Tesla owners don't seem to have range anxiety, and super charger network will be ready for the less expensive 3 and Y.
