There was some discussion recently in a CleanMPG thread on highway driving about how Can-View reports ignition timing. Evan and I both reported a difference between what we were seeing on CV versus how others saw it reported on ScanGauge and an Autoenginuity scan tool. In particular, there was an offset of 14° -- e.g., in ICE-off conditions SG was reporting 5° BTDC, whereas CV reported it as 19°.

In a subsequent e-mail dialog I had with Norm he verified the 14° offset. As to why, he recalled some debate early on about whether there was a difference due to the Atkinson cycle engine (and a subsequent change to CV), but he couldn't remember the details of the discussion nor exactly why he decided to calculate it this way.

So after I raised the issue, he had Frank Hudon verify it for the Prius by checking actual timing with a timing light. Here is Norm's subsequent response:

"Frank's tests showed his CAN-view displaying 12 degrees out compared to his pro timing light, so given the resolution of a white paint mark on a shaft, that probably means it is 14 degrees out.

SO: I will re-write all the code versions for CAN-views present and past to match scan-gauge, which means going back to what I had 2 years ago.

Neither Frank nor I can now remember what triggered the change in the first place, although it must have been input from customers because I wouldn't have changed what I'd had working for 6 months without some serious requests. But I guess thats history now (unless some customer notices and brings up whatever that old reason was).

These changes I hope will get done and posted in the next 24 hours."

That was from two days ago, so presumably the updates are available now.

YES!!! he is back on line, I think he managed to hire some elf's because Norm is back into CAN View production and excel customer support.
    Welcome back......

Cool, glad to hear it b/c I've had a couple quirks...

With the Audio button on the bezel only:
If I hit audio to get to that screen that works fine. In the past I could hit the audio button again and it would return to the CAN-View screen (default). But now it goes to a "frozen" NAV screen...IOW none of the buttons work. To get back to CAN-View I have to hit the INFO button twice.
Is that just me or is it a bug in the latest software update?

as a quick test reload the last update and see if it returns if it does then that will give Norm more info to go on. Ours still works fine since the last flash.

are there replacement cables for the canview? mine seem to cut itself (the tiny cable that sticks in the main relay?) and now my canview only shows a frozen state when its first turned on. Although funny as it sounds going back to the energy display helped me coast better because of the no arrows state.

It's great that Norm's back. I'm having a problem with the latest update and talked to Norm about it some months back. It turns out that Norm and I and one other person are the only ones using the Pioneer Nav system. When he updated to the trip function, knowing this, he wasn't too worried about the Nav. Since memory was limited it is causing problems now in my system.

Does anyone have a copy of the code just prior to the Trip update??

So far I know, the Hybrid Interfaces web host service Norm is using, had problems.
H-I with the Can View products is still in business.

So I am desperate/very interested in exploring the CAN data stream to see if selected DTCs can be suppressed.
I'm the guy with the Prius pickup truck modification ( in the Gen II main forum). I am experiencing a persistent traction battery heat problem due to the fact it lies right under the truck bed. I have partially solved the problem by diverting cabin air-conditioned air into the battery fan plenum and making the blower run on full 12Volts all the time when necessary. Normally, using the Toyota scheme, that doesn't happen until the battery temperature approaches 123F, way too high for my level of comfort.

I presume that most of the year I can use the normal Traction battery cooling schedule, but at some times during the Florida summers and after parking the car (truck) in a parking lot, the radiant heat from the black coated truckbed overwhelms the system.

So I have devised a way to get the blower going full blast. When I switch the cooling fan to "high" it connects the blower motor to chassis ground, and the fan goes in high blower mode. The problem with that is that it removes the blower motor VM voltage signal from the circuit, and that generates DTC P0A84 or P0A86 due to not having a reasonable voltage reference at the blower motor. Well Yeah, I know that.

I have played with various resistor networks to satisfy the VM monitoring signal but so far not with good results......

The best solution would be to suppress those DTCs, since I know exactly why they are occurring that would be a safe thing to do. I suspect there are some Prius Chat experts out there that could solve my problem.

    Please ?????????..........................................Ruudh

I am reading the aggregate total of CANview posts and it is a little overwhelming. But I am slogging through it. But from my incomplete and limited understanding of it all it would seem that in addition to the CANview computer/board it would involve a keyboard and an additional VGA monitor, which is a little cumbersome for day to day driving/operations. In any case, I need to learn everything I can about CANview....RH

Wow!! Thank you. Providing the additional RC circuit provides the correct impedance to keep the hybrid battery ECU happy and therefore keep if from generating the "voltage discrepancy DTCs", this is exactly what I need. I already had something like that. Although I appreciate the capabilities of CANview, I believe it to be an overkill for me.

I have decided that rather than making the Aux battery the alternate power source directly, I will hook the circuit to ACC power. This provides two advantages: 1) it prevents me from accidentally leaving the car with the blower in the "high" mode and thereby draining the little 42 AHr battery in a little over 1 hour, and 2) that source is already fused.

Thank you for providing me with a suitable solution. I will continue to read up on CAN-view becasue it seems interesting and capable of many things.....I will be forever grateful .............Ruud
