How long did you wait for first oil change?

    Don't Priuses have oil filters?

I'm just guessing here, but if there's a cup full of metal shavings cruising around in the oil after the engine has been assembled, then it SHOULD only get one pass through the motor before it's trapped in the filter.
As far as the "break-in" oil?
I'm thinking that that's an urban legend too....for Priuses, anyway.

    I use a 5,000 mile OCI.
If I bought a G4 I might change the oil a little early, but only to make a visual inspection under the car and get used to the new oil change procedure.

The Earth will be orbiting a cold dead star before I allow a Toyota mechanic to change my oil.

    Period.

    I will +1 your 1, and raise you 2! :)

I bought the Prius because it was supposedly a very reliable, low-maintenance vehicle. And there are many great testimonials out there, saying just that.
Sure miss the days when I was younger, and able to be a DIY guy. I sure heard enough horror stories and stories of dealer deceit from my dad, who worked in the car mechanic business for 60 years.

You could make some good cash on the side, if you were to offer to do oil changes for family, friends, neighbors. I'd gladly pay someone like you the same money as I was paying a dealer.

Dealers around here, $49 to $69 for just the oil change.
But it's not the money, It would be nice to find a good private shop that knows the Prius. A good place to get a 2nd opinion on repairs, if needed,

But, no worries, Mate! The dealer has free coffee and donuts.

That sounds like a good place, very good prices for both, and no run-around on the transaxle fluid change, crazy stories about it being sealed, or extremely involved procedure.

No, the oil looked fairly clean at 2500 Mi. Just want to get clean Mobil 1 in her. Then work up to 5K changes. Not an add for mobil but I've run it in in everything for 20 years now. My Gen 2, at 200K, looked perfectly clean under the valve cover. For me cheep insurance. That said I do nothing except fluids and filters. There's nothing else to do to a Prius.

LOL, brother I know where your coming from. The oil change jobs are day one job for the new kid. On the occasion I would get it done on my old CRV (filter in a horrible location) I wouldn't even start the car before checking the level. Many time 1/2 quart low, and the dip stick laying on the engine. They striped my wife's drain plug.

I have to get new ramps or make mine higher. The gen 4 filter is further back. Get the right filter wrench. When I looked at it, I thought it was something new. So got one at Toyota, that didn't work. It engaged with the spring clip. The old wrench I had worked fine.

I didn't have my oil checked, but I will say this, I waited till I hit 10,000 miles to change mine and the oil was really dark!! I decided to change mine every 5,000 and just changed it and the oil was much cleaner looking and a lighter color (with a red tint). Seeing the big difference with my eyes for me was the defining moment of doing mine every 5,000. For me, I don't like seeing dark brown oil between changes.

My friend talked me out of a tranny earl change at 4777. But still want it done to get the big chunks out.

Might be a left over meal in there.

I booked the oil change at 5000 online, when I got there and explicitly said I was there for an oil change I was informed that only the tires would be moved, no oil change, an hour each way...bought the filter and Mobil one on the way home.

Only had to push the post button three times to get this post, posted

Don't let them intimidate you with nonsense stories! Changing the transaxle lubricant requires no more expertise than changing engine oil, and very little more in the way of tools---just an ordinary 10mm hex key (aka, "allen wrench") and some sort of syringe, pump, or hose+funnel to transfer fluid from bottle through the fill hole in the side of the transmission.

I would spring for a set of allen-key-on-a-socket's, much easier to use, with a ratchet wrench, preferably a long-handled one. Plus you can use them on a torque wrench when re-installing. Stanley makes a set, for one:

    upload_2016-9-10_19-35-22.png

(That's one thing I like better about Honda, they use a square 3/8" socket head cap screw, you just use a bare 3/8" ratchet wrench drive (or an extension). And the drain bolts always have a magnet. I recall phoning a dealership about 35 years back, asking if they might have the special wrench needed for the transmission drain bolt. They let me off gently.)

You have to tell them you will pay for it. Money talks.

Also update on the service. They missed filling the windshield washer tank and my tires are at 39PSI and not 42 PSI. Need to fix that today as I am doing a 60K test at 42PSI for the spread sheet. Others are doing the lower pressures.

Oil looked clean but no way to check to see if the filter was changed.

My 2011 new EP 20 MIJ/OEM tires are at 42PSI and ride hard. The 2016 Touring tires ride nice at 42PSI.

My dealer took my money willingly, and quickly! :D " Yes sir, you want an oil change at 4,950 miles? Step right up!" And free donuts right over there."

Then a week later, I get a card in the mail: "Just a reminder that you missed your 5,000 mile service for your Prius."

....what is this transaxle you guys are talking about? When I hear the word "transaxle", I'm reminded of the rear-end gears on a '74 Chevy. :ROFLMAO:

Do you mean the Transmission fluid? And what kind of fluid does a CVT use? I thought it was just belts in there...
