So just to verify, when they have the spare (and it's pretty much all Canadian levels) the hatch floor is level with the hatch threshold?

I just have this (false?) recollection of dropped floor and spare.

Almost. I went outside and measured. There's a 1" lip with a spare tire.

But without the spare, there is a noticeable drop in the floor. (However large that is. I think it's close to 3")

A simple ethafoam slab will fix this if it's deemed a problem. Ethafoam is available 1/2", 1", and 2" thick sheets. You can glue them together with various types of contact cement (I like the 3M spray on box glue). It won't break no matter what you do to it, it's "soft" to the touch (polyethylene), and it doesn't absorb water - it repels it. If you look hard enough you can find white and black, though white is most common. Try cement accessory places. It's used in buildings to insulate cement parts from each other. It also doesn't have much of a smell, unless you heat it up enough to melt it. You may even find some from packing of flat panel TVs and monitors, especially the very large commercial ones. I have two slabs of 1" black from that.

Oh, use a serrated kitchen paring knife to cut it. Seems to work best. ;)

I did this and added some storage compartments in the foam.
