I have a 2004 Prius. Today, this part was on the ground when I backed up the car. The car is parked outside all the time and may have gotten pack rats in its engine compartment. What part is this? I googled but was not really able to find anything.

Right now, the car is parked until more info on this part can be found; and based on the info, whether the car is safe to drive or if it needs to be towed to the nearest mechanic.

If you need more pics with different angles, let me know.

    Much thanks!
    Todd

Doesn't look to be a prius part. There should be a part number on it, just Google the number

    It looks like a switch?

If you aren't seeing any warning lights, I wouldn't worry. If that part truly came from your Prius, and it was critical, warning light(s) would likely be displayed, b/c the various ECUs are not getting information they need from that part. Also, the car might run weird or maybe not at all.

Since the part is an electrical part of some sort, a fuse may have been blown or will be blown. Again, warning light(s) would likely be displayed, and the car may possibly run weird or not at all.

So, if you are not seeing dash lights, and the car is not running weird, or not at all, don't worry. Maybe just keep that part in the bottom storage drawer of the center console, for peace of mind. If car continues to operate normally for a year, toss the part.

Do you have mini VCI w/ Techstream? If not, consider getting it, as it is a useful tool to properly read ALL codes from your Prius. Anything other than this is a crap shoot. If Techstream shows nothing, this would be a further confirmation that the part is not likely from your Prius, at least in terms of engine and hybrid operation. If that part was a door switch, for arguments sake, it would likely not affect engine operation, unless the switch happened to share the same fused power supply as a vital engine component, say the fuel pump.

Ah, yep, I'm seeing warning lights galore, including ABS and Brake lights (even though the brake is disengaged). I found a huge packrat dead under the engine compartment. I'll look into that mini VCI w/ TechStream. Thanks!

Contact Steve at Autobeyours (Prius hybrids sales and service Scottsburg Indiana). He will likely know b/c he is a skilled salvage rebuilder w/ a solid reputation. If he does know, he can likely sell that part off a junked Pri they scavange for parts.

If he knows what it is with high certainty, let us know. Others may be curious what that part is/does.

Thanks for the name. I reached out to Steve. He responded. He said, quote, that the part closely resembles the outside air thermostat ( the one that provides information to the driver on the touch screen) and if so...is normally located just below the hood latch in the front of the radiator. unquote.

I'll be going out to check on that later. He did reinforce an earlier reply by exstudent to look up the trouble codes.

I looked at my car and that sensor is upside down pointing down at the bottom of the condenser so hard to get a pic of it and it looks a little like it except the sensor end on my car is very bulbous and there's 2 very small wires coming out of not like all the wiring mess coming out of the OP's picture so I think JC is probably correct.

Concur. That's not how wires should look if they were pulled out of a connector or became disconnected and fell of a vehicle. The bare wiring is also corroded so this just didn't happen recently.
