European unveiling of new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid - Toyota

So it looks like it'll be called the "Prius PHV" in Europe, which matches the Japanese branding (ZVW35 was "Prius Plug-in Hybrid" in Europe).

Seems like the solar panel and LED headlights will be standard here - although not confirmed yet.

360 litre boot space sounds quite small (was 440 in the ZVW35) - a lot smaller than the US claims of 19.75 cu ft (559 litres) so I would be suspicious of the latter.

Having a heat pump will be a great addition - I saw mentions of a secondary heat source elsewhere but not this specific.

30 mile claimed EV range is probably based on the NEDC test cycle which has little bearing on reality - I would trust the US EPA figures more. Standard charging time of 3h10m is probably based on 230V @ 10A (I doubt they've made a 13A charger specifically for the UK/Ireland).

360L is larger than what we were estimating. We were thinking about 300L.

Yeah we don't trust the EPA numbers. It must be using absolute max cargo space rather than useful cargo space.

For short I would call it PiP2 (which includes the Prime as well).
I doubt if the solar panel will be standard for all trims.

The MPGe stated is for Imperial gallon I assume.

It's not MPGe - that is a standard measurement defined by the US EPA. That 282.5 MPG (235 US MPG or 1.0 l/100km) is probably based on actual fuel consumption during the NEDC test which is essentially useless. It's totally outdated doesn't reflect real world driving, either for emissions or fuel consumption.

The ZVW35 got 135 MPG (imperial) in the same test - who ever gets that, unless maybe you're doing 90% EV driving?

Why is solar panel standard in the UK? I thought it rains most of the time there... I know supposedly it's not released in the US because of rollover standards... But hopefully it is next year. That might win me over the fact it only has 4 seats

I wonder if they are going to supply both cables with the car.

Yes, the max power in EV is limited by the battery capability - 68kW.
That is about 193A from battery (7.7C discharge rate) BTW.

UK specifications have not been confirmed (see disclaimer at the bottom of the post), so not sure if they're standard. It suggests they have met type approval for sale in the EU at least. Solar panels do actually work here - of course they won't be as effective as sunnier places but PV technology has improved a lot over the years.

It's probably up to the local distributors, especially as tax on new cars varies significantly between different countries in Europe, so specs will differ to keep costs down where needed. It seems normal here in Ireland and the UK for PHEVs to only come with domestic charging cables.

Yeah, isn't the max output on MG2 in the original PIP 80 bhp? Doesn't sound like much of an upgrade, unless it never reached that in normal driving.

Oh excellent! Today is the day!
Tideland and I have been patiently waiting so long for that number!
    >>That is our first quote of EU cargo space! (12.7 ft3)
Between that and CA Green HOV stickers...had to wait such a long wait for the answers.

Later I will give a comparative estimate of Gen2,Gen3,Gen4,PiP and Prime

    Re: EPA Cargo Space-
For Liftbacks, the EPA Cargo Space seems to give the opportunity to claim some of the rear seat space as Cargo Space...envision that there is a "gray area" where you could call it rear seat space, or Cargo Space...the EPA method allows claiming that gray area, probably related to window locations etc. So basically Toyota (and others) are intentionally designing to maximize what EPA allows to be claimed.

The maximum output of the PiP battery is 38kW that is all you have in EV - so much of an upgrade! MG2 power rating is higher as it accepts current from MG1 as well as from the battery in full load requirements. (when ICE and motor work together).

Did I miss somethings? I don't remember reading about the car having the ability to warm the battery.

The wheels look better than those available in the US.

The EPA volume is to the ceiling.

It didn't come to the US because of cost. It is a $3000 option in Japan.

They could have simply confused the MG2 power during hybrid operation for EV.
There could be a simple heater in case the battery itself drops below freezing. Most LI-ion chemistries can't be charged at that point. The Leaf has such a heater.

Using a battery warms it. When we pre-condition on a cold morning, the pack temp rises because of both electric flow in/out and the interior temp rise from the heater. On a cold day, you get more range if the battery is warm. The opposite holds true on really hot days, the cooler the batt, the more range.

A battery engineer once told me: if you're happy (comfortable), the battery is too.

Warming the battery during charging. Programmable.

cited from the press text: In a world-first, the automatic air conditioning is powered by an efficient gas injection heat pump. Using heat absorbed from the outside air, it is capable of warming the cabin without having to start the engine, even when external temperatures drop as low as -10°C. This minimises the impact that heating the car’s interior has on the EV driving range.

During charging, a new battery warming system will also heat the cells to an efficient working temperature. This means full power is available from start-off, even if outside conditions are as cold as -20°C.

Real two color wheels without plastic:

Here pictures of the European style interior with the nice 8" touch screen. There is also left right temperature control.

Thanks. I hadn't seen mention of the battery warming ability before. That's just another clever improvement.

I don't know for hte UK. In the German press map, I read:

This translates like there is a dedicated model. Probably the top one.

The EU cargo space, on the other hand, is calculated to the sliding cover level, leaving a big 'gray volume' behind the rear seats and above the cover.

Well not sure...how do you know? (sometimes they say)
Part of the problem with cargo space, even when we have a good number, we just about never know what they are including.

Toyota quotes a luggage space (502-liters for Gen4/no spare). That's 17.6 ft3 for Gen4 (vs. 27.4 EPA Cargo Space). If we have or can get the Toyota number then I assume it includes the whole space.
