Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

    Sure but how many of those are ex japan. Foreasts outside of japan have not been met.

    It is the forecasts that I am calling the promises.
    To what percent of the european market? Hybrids in europe were only 1.4% of EU 28 in 2014. A 17% increasese would get you where? 1.6%. That's great when you are only 4.8% of the market (33% hybrids), but the increase doesn't help account for the decrease in the ROW outside japan.

    If we call euroep eu28, it would be, but ... I think those numbers must be for a much bigger area including Russia and the middle east. In that bigger market toyota accounted for only 4.6% and 209 toyota and lexus hybrids. Toyota and Lexus are not gaining market share, they are simply shifting to hybrids. So if we take this 17% toyota hybrids gained 30 hybrids in europe + russia and parts of the middle east and asia (toyota europe terrority which is much bigger than eu28), while losing 68 thousand in the US.
    I truely hope the gen IV prius and rav4 hybrid sell well and stop the bleeding, but it is prettly clear there is hybrid bleading outside of japan. For context Toyota/Lexus europe sold 209K hybrids but failed to gain market share in 2015. In the US hybrids sold 384K hybrids and it was an awful year compared to 2013.

    I was optimistic in the past that regulations would help build hybrid market share, but it seems that it is only high in the US and Japan, and US is fading. Maybe Europe will improve in the next decade, but I would not bet on it.

    Hyundai isn't yet quoting MPG figures for the Ioniq, but it does reveal a CO2 figure of 79g/km: That's 9g/km more than the entry-level Prius.

    This is the first report by non-Korean, testers so we can do partial fractions:
    • (79 - 9) / 79 ~= 88.6% worse than their "entry-level Prius"
    • 88.6% * 52 MPG = 46 MPG (worst case)
    • 88.6% * 56 MPG = 49 MPG (best case)
    This makes more sense. Regardless, by fourth quarter, October-December, the Ioniq will finally meets 'the EPA.'

    Prices and fuel economy under EU test cycle announced in UK:

    According to EU FE cycle, it does compare to the values of Prius IV EU versions, this way:

    Ioniq Premium SE with optional 17" wheels = 3.4 lt/100 - 69 MPG
    Prius EU Top model , 17" wheels = 3.3 lt/100 - 71 MPG

    On linear scaling from CO2 values:

    Ioniq all trims , 15" wheels = 3.23 lt/100 - 73 MPG
    Prius EU base model , 15" wheels = 3.0 lt/100 - 78 MPG

    Very wise to offer 15" as standard on all trim and an optional 17" (480 Eur) on the top trim.

    Prices are extremely competitive relative to Prius:

    too bad such a great car is coming out when no one cares. by the time gas prices go up, t will just be another memory, and hundai will have moved on to their newest santa fe.

    good point. if hundai is already doing well there, gas prices may make a lot of people look. especially since so many say that prius is overpriced.

    and the gen 4 lift back. but like the model x, i have never had to crawl in from the passenger side. these 'features' are a solution waiting for a problem.

    That's okay ... my dad didn't see the need for an automatic tranny, AC or electric windows. His dad probably didn't see the need for an electric starter motor. I, on the other hand, I want to be able to start my coffee pot via Wi-Fi

    I see the IONIQ versions - Hybrid/PlugIn/EV - now have pretty complete specs available, which is timely now that we also have more complete Prime specs available.

    Hyundai IONIQ Electric Becomes U.S.' Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicle - Knocks BMW i3 Out Of Top Spot

    The numbers look quite impressive but I reserve judgement. I don't understand how the Plug-in has the same passenger/cargo space almost as the Hybrid and likewise for the EV. But if true that's huge deal assuming it makes sense.

    Keep in mind, EPA Cargo space is useless to me, but looking at the total space, IONIQ seems 8-ft3 better than Prime.

    Except that the Prime knocked it out of spot #1 with the official EPA numbers. I'm curious to see the IONIQ's hybrid MPG.

    One of the Hyundai execs said in an interview that the Ioniq hybrid has a combined mileage of 58mpg.
