Trollbait is not alone. I'm pleasantly surprised by the price, but still disappointed by the lack of the 5th seat. Then again, I also have no intentions to buy the Prius Prime, since at this point I would prefer all-electric (Tesla Model 3 reservation holder, coming from purchasing two Prius's within the past few years).

Given that the Prime is much Heavier and slightly less Aerodynamic than a regular Prius...how exactly is it much more efficient, nearly matching the Prius Two Eco in Hybrid mode MPG? Larger battery buffer zone, maybe? I can see that helping for city driving, but the 53 MPG for highway driving is a curiosity...

Because I was speaking about comments posted here through out all the Prime threads,
It's a benefit for Toyota, but not necessarily one for the consumer. Then it might not as big of a benefit for Toyota if they truly want into the plug in market.

It is a Prius Prime. Lacking a fifth seat will reduce Prius sales, which will have more profit, lost to the Prime, but plug ins are attracting buyers that didn't consider, or at least own a hybrid before. If the fifth seat is a must for those people, they likely won't go with a the regular Prius instead, but go to Chevy, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, or even a luxury brand now offering a PHEV.
A larger traction pack can be a big plus for hybrid efficiency. IIRC, the PiP had a 1 mpg advantage over the gen3.

Also, I wonder if the 0.24 figure is for the Prius Eco, and then Toyota just applied it to the Liftback (which has a rear wiper, that the Eco doesn't)...

Could also be gearing differences? If the Prime has taller gearing to enable higher speeds with the ICE at 0 RPM, that could explain it too...

Reasons enough to make all Gen V Prius a plug-in, entry level could be in the low teens for EV Mileage, while Toyota could increase Hybrid mode MPG by 2-3 without doing anything extra.

It makes me want to rip off my rear wiper that I never use...

I use it all the time, especially in the winter when snow blowing off the roof accumulates on the back window.

I could use a second rear wiper on the lower window at times...

I do too,i wounder if Toyota has a special coating on the rear window of the Prime ?
I know some owners don't think the rear wiper is very useful, but It is to me .
It will take some time to get used to not having one anymore .

The prices quoted are about $8K less than the original PiPs (2012) at two of the three levels.

    Wow.

I've been focused on some family issues for a bit, so just learned of the pricing announcement today. I am simply blown away, and must apologize to those who argued a near-$25k price was a possibility for the Prime (okay, it splits the difference betwen 25 and 30, but honestly, I just didn't see it happening for much under $30k, and this is much under). In markets offering rebates instead of just limited federal tax credits, the Prime will undercut the LB on price alone for any buyer, even more for folks with federal tax bills. I find this mystifying, but it seems Toyota really is serious about moving this car (or at least all the Highlanders and 4Runners these will offset for CAFE, as well as banking ZEV creds). The four-seat thing remains an annoyance and I'll have to see the higher/smaller trunk for myself to judge its utility, but at this price point I think the value is more than solid. There are many use cases where this would be an ideal vehicle, i.e., short commutes that would be abusive to an ICEV over the long haul, with a need to support convenient long distance travel (ruling out most BEVs), and it's a darned good fit for many more, e.g., a commute like my last one in more wintry climes a decade ago, a longish highway stretch (ideal for the hybrid-enhanced ICE) bookended by a few miles of side street driving (all of which could have been done in EV mode for considerable savings). The Prime is certainly going to win some sales away from the more EV-ish but less fuel-efficient Volt with a much nicer back seat (the Volt's 5th seat is strictly for laughs) and decent cargo utility. And hey, it's a Toyota!

Bottom line: if (God forbid) my beloved i-MiEV were to get totaled, the Prime would be near the top of my list as a replacement. Two months ago I wouldn't have thought that possible. As I wrote back in June:
Turns out it was achievable, and Toyota chose to go for it. Price really was everything for the Prime, and I'm glad to see Toyota figured that out before launch time.

On my 2006 Prius, I recall the Fed Tax credit was limited due to AMT. Which made it not much of a credit.
    Has that changed?

The federal tax credit for PHEVs and BEVs is still a non-refundable credit.

Now, that doesn't mean that it can't increase your refund, but it means that if your tax liability (that is, after other tax deductions, but before withholding) is less than $4502, you won't get the full tax credit.

The BEV/PHEV credits are not, to my knowledge, affected by the AMT. Check with you tax preparer to make sure.
