i'm thinking, like the hatch back, prime will need to be heavily discounted outside of cali. at $4. gas, it won't likely be.

Sadly, yes. I saw $2.79/gal in most of CA. Didn't go into SF or LA but just skimmed by last week.

Good to know. Assuming electric rates and gas prices remain the same we would save bout $290/year on 20,000 miles driving the Prime.

The way I see it the Prime negatives are white console and steering wheel, lower egress and ingress, no spare tire, the seats in our 2008 are the most comfortable for me, I don't have any issues with ride and handling in either our 2008 or 2015, and the Prime has less cargo space. So for me the EV portion was the attractive feature that I had to weigh against the negatives. Now that I see the EV isn't going to save us much money the Prime becomes much less interesting.

With the negative things Toyota has implemented in the 2016 hatchback and the Prime I've been searching for something else to buy. I may step away from high mpg and go for something like the new Honda CRV. At any rate I'm still looking. I thought the Prime was the answer.

The G4's drive way better than either the G3's or the G2's. They are quieter, more comfortable, way smoother over rough roads, have way less body roll and are just better mechanically from a human perspective. They screwed up the interior something fierce by removing all that wonderful storage everywhere, but the Prime partially makes up for that with some underfloor storage in the rear and an extra console in the back seat.

I'm not interested in the driving characteristics because I feel our 2008 and 2015 are fine as is. I can understand why some people want better driving characteristics though. They just don't mean much to me. I drive for high mileage, don't corner fast, and don't drive on rough roads. In fact, after many complaints about the 2008 seats, I think they are more comfortable than the 2015.

Toyota has made some bad decisions. One is getting rid of the storage spaces, especially the top glove box. Another is shifting away from having a spare tire. At least the 2016 hatchback has some models that still have a spare. The white accents have been largely panned. I've come to realize it isn't so much that the components are white, rather it seems to be Toyota's choice of which white they used. It is too much like a toilet bowl rather than a softer shade that I could live with.

I guess one advantage of the Prime is a decision could be made to use battery power or gas depending on which is cheaper. That isn't an option in the standard Prius. If gas prices pop then I could charge the battery as often as possible and mostly avoid buying gas. If electric rates pop then I could decide to quit charging and stick with gas.

US gal. We don't use gallons up here for gasoline. Price is quoted per litre.

I want to say it was 1976 when we switched to the metric system but I forget now lol.

Even though we use L/100km for fuel ratings, fuel economy in brochures are still listed in both L/100km and imp. MPG. (and fuel tank size is listed in both litres and imp. gal).

Fortunately, other measurements are listed in both units (mm and inches; litres and cubic feet)

Yea, I hear ya. I still convert back to MPG, always have and been down here in the US 18 years now. But we go back 2 or 3 times a year for family stuff.
