I keep a small jumper cable kit and other little things like that in the left cubby in my 2004. Very handy not to have them floating around in the trunk or on the floor somewhere. I was thinking of building my own underfloor storage for the 2016 when I was considering buying that model, simply because I use it every day. The Prime, despite its loss of vertical storage space in the cargo area, is actually better in this area having that slot in the back for the cover and other things, the empty cubby on the right side, and the console storage in the back seat.

If Toyota hadn't filled all that empty space around the spare tire or inflator kit with foam, or kept the second glove box, then the Prime would have no pluses when it came to storing or transporting stuff.

Presumably, Prime would also have the second glove box and it would still have the console in the back seat. Sadly, Toyota did fill that cargo area with foam which was my biggest complaint against the entire car (the glove box being second, and the packages being third).

But, oh well, I'm almost certainly going to buy a Prime. It's around $5,000 cheaper for me than a comparable Three and $9,500 cheaper than a comparable Four, and I'll love having a usable Ev mode. I added Ev to my 2004 through the Coastal kit, and it's great except for the extremely small battery capacity. In practice, it's 3 bars to 6 bars which is, what, 200Wh or something? And it limits to 34mph which is better than G3 or G4 but not close to the 84MPH of Prime.

Video link seems broken at the moment.

    Ok.

    1. Seems like the rear of the boot floor is hinged and can be raised, from the photo. Is that right? What's under there?
    2. Can the Prime boot really be only 13cm tall. Is that what folk are saying? That is only 54 % of the height of the Gen2! It's not so much a boot as a shelf!

A slot for storing things such as the tonneau cover, the charge cord, or whatever fits in there.

It's way taller than that. I'm not sure what measurement you are looking for, but there's a picture of a 20" (51cm) backpack in there.

The video is working for me.

    Thanks for replying.

The height I'm referring to is that under the tonneau cover, quoted by Jan or Mister MMT. The key thing for me is how much I can store out of sight and so secure from attracting possible theft and protected from the sun.

Isn't the picture you are referring to using the full height to the car roof?

Beats me. To me, the cover doesn't provide security. It's the opposite - it attracts attention because it makes it look like you are hiding something.

That's why I love the under-floor storage in my 2004. The cover can be open and the entire cargo area looks empty despite the fact that my camera and laptop are under the floor.

The tonneau cover serves one purpose - keeping sensitive items out of the sun.

This is actually one thing that the Prime has over the G4 liftback. The liftback has no underfloor storage whatsoever unless you build it yourself. The Prime has the slot in back and the two wings. Not as nice as the G2 or G3 underfloor storage, but room for my laptop and a few other things to be kept entirely out of sight without making it look like I'm trying to hide something.

IMG_2824.JPG The space under the tonneau cover is about 8" high, shown in the photos I posted on the first page of this thread (a brochure laying sideways). The underfloor storage is very small, just enough room for the charger cord. The two wing storage areas are only good for small items like a pair of gloves etc.

Here's a comparison to the height of 2 of my fists, 105mm each. Try stacking both of your fists on top of each other and that's about the height of the space under the tonneau cover.

I saw a video of the charger cord and the tonneau cover in the underfloor at the same time. If neither of those are in there, there must be room for some smaller items. It looked pretty deep but I didn't get a measurement. Should be plenty of room for an emergency blanket or two and possibly a small tool kit or two.

As for the wings, the left one comes with a compressor and the goo kit for fixing a leaking tire. The right one empty. I normally carry a small jumper cable kit in one of the wings in my 2004 and I plan to replace Toyota's tire repair kit with something else. I would expect all of that to fit in the wing areas pretty easily.

That's actually a major advantage for me since I'll likely rarely or never have the charge cord or tonneau under the back slot and since the regular G4 liftback has nothing at all.

    Jumper cables will fit.

In my G3 I have a spare pair of shoes, jacket, towel. I don't think that is possible in the Prime. It's maybe 1/5 the size of the G3 underfloor storage.

I have jumper cables in the left wing pocket in my G2 where the tire repair kit is in the Prime. I would guess those would fit in the Prime right wing easily (it's a kit barely bigger than my hand).

Using the cover attracts attention I guess if that's an unusual thing to do. Here in the uk, car security advice is to keep things out of sight and as most people have hatchbacks and use covers it means:
    A. This is not unusual here in the UK
    B. The car looks the same whether the boot is full or empty.
    C. Without the cover and with cargo, the car stands out as a more attractive proposition to thieves.

It seems that for us then in this country, this very restricted height could be a very serious drawback.

No, it's a common use item here. Many hatchbacks have a rigid fiber-board design with string connectors that raise/lower it with the liftgate. I also like to use them for the slight sound deadening they provide and keeping the battery area cooler.

Either Toyota is lying or something is wrong with the measurements!
Toyota said in German press release that the floor has been raised 16 cm ~6.3 inches based on the gen 4 without spare tire .
Owners of gen 4 without the spare tire say that there is about 43 cm~16.9 Inches from cargo floor to the cargo cover(maybe somebody with the 2 Eco can measure it ? ),so the Prime should have 27 cm~10.62 inches left between cargo floor and cargo cover otherwise Toyota must have changed the whole trunk configuration which seems unlikely because Prius liftback and Prime are based on the same body .

These were the measurement numbers quoted by Mr MMT earlier in this thread:

I verified the Gen2 numbers. These are "under tonneau cover" numbers.

As a rough approx. (based on Gen2):
    vol, ft3 = 10 x height in feet
    so Gen2 approx = 11.5 ft3 under tonneau
    so Prime approx = 7.9 ft3
    so Gen4 no spare= 14.1 ft3

Onto this you must add above tonneau cover to get total, and of course Gen2/3 had add'l under floor space

smaller hatch space is going to be an issue in this country as well.

FWIW, Gen 4 with temporary spare tire has a 1" lip (so it's more like 9-ish inches which is close to what MMT posted earlier.

Also, the 9.45 inches (24cm) that MMT posted matches the photo/video of one of the test drives from Ojai where a US carry-on baggage is shown in the cargo area and is below the tonneau cover height (that's approximately 9" depth/23cm).

Does the battery take up the whole width of the raised floor? Wondering whether any space might be gained by removing padding that had possibly been put in just to make the boot floor flat.
Thought I recalled that someone said this was the case in a version they saw.

yes, it takes up the whole width. if you're looking for more space, join us over in the 'disappointed in prime hatch space' thread.
