Restore dead Prius

    Thank you T E M, I may be jumping into a mess. But, everything, that I could check, looked excellent. My OBD2 code reader only found that the battery was disconnected.
    I just obtained a used battery, initial check is good, all cells look normal and the voltage is 210. It came out of a not very violent side swipe wreck. I am optimistic. I plan on swapping the battery and re-initializing and calibrating the new battery.

    The used battery checks 210v static volts even through the battery has set for several months. I plan to replace the battery and initialize it thru the Prius utilities. After starting the car, it will naturally charge the battery as needed, correct?

    Finally have had a few moments to work on the car.
    The HV battery is in, it looks very good, reads 210 static volts
    The 12v battery is ok, it reads 12.45 static volts and at the dash diagnostic screen I have 11.6v with the brake pedal depressed.

    But I have no green light ... when the shift lever is put into drive, the dash indicator shows it stops at N (neutral) and
    I have no start. My OBDII scanner shows no codes.

    Symptoms: red triangle and the brake light on the left side of the dash display never goes away. I took a picture to show all indicators:

    Suggestions?

    Try again and push start button twice with brake pedal depressed.

    +1 Did you step on the brake pedal when starting the car and trying to put it in gear?

    The orange car w/ exclamation point on the MFD suggests a an issue with the HV battery. Did you replace it yet, and is the orange disconnector plug seated properly?

    Brake pedal depressed, then I push the main start button, small motors make sounds from the engine area, they stop, I slide the shift lever to drive and it stops at N. No motor start.

    HV battery is a replacement as stated above, the orange plug is set in all the way with the lever arm up.

    Fotomoto I just tried hitting the start button twice, it didn't seem to help; unless there is a special trick to this double button press?

    Try pushing the lever down to the seated position as indicated in #3 of the attached graphic. Then Press the START button twice in succession with your foot on the brake.

    dolj the graphic helped, I did not have the lock slide down. But even after pushing this down the start button is still not green and I have no start.

    Have you powered off then tried powering on again?

    What do you hear and see when you press START with your foot on the brake?

    Being new to these cars myself I went through the same issues. Press brake pedal and press power. Should start engine in 7 seconds. If you don't depress brake you cycle through accessory position. Even when I pressed the brake and battery disconnect was in right still took three attempts before the triangle went out. Sounds were different every time.

    In my post #23 is a photo of the dash lights, do you see anything that would stop the start sequence?
    My start sequence is as follows:

    insert fob, MFD boots up
    push brake pedal down firmly (small motor sounds from the engine area, like a pump or something)
    push start button (silence) wait a few seconds
    slide drive lever to D and it only lights up N for neutral, motor does not start.

    At what point do all the dash lights come on?

    Before touching the shift lever, hit the gas pedal in an attempt to start the ICE.

    I was under the impression that the ICE would start up when you power up a Prius that has been sitting/cold, which is the situation here. I think that is the way for the catalytic converter to get up to operating temp ASAP.

    This is how my Prius operates. The only way to get around this is to do the "EV" button mod on the gen 2 prius.

    In other words, you should get the engine to start up without having to touch the accelerator pedal... provided everything else has gone through a satisfactory "startup test".

    Mine (when I had a 2004 and a 2010) took as much as 10 seconds before firing up the ICE. My suggestion was assuming that the OP was trying to put it into Drive almost immediately and then encountering all the failure lights.

    Don you are correct, I am trying to slide the shift lever into drive after just a few seconds. I will wait longer for this.

    On a different note. I am assuming the the start button has to be green for the ICE to start, is this correct? If yes and I only have an amber light, is the next course of action to read the internal codes with the tech stream scanner?

    Yes, you should get the trouble codes read to determine what the underlying cause of the failures really is.

    Tried the patient approach per Don, brake pedal depressed, wait 15 seconds, press the gas ... no start.
    I played with the display a bit and found the Energy graphic, note the battery is empty and has a red bar at the bottom - is this the problem? Looks like a dead HV battery. Can this battery be charged?
