I bought a 2016 Prius Touring 4 recently and come across the same problem as many have posted on the gen 2 and gen 3. The hatchback when open is very tall and hits the garage door.

I've seen another post where they were able to replace the lift support struts and lower the height of the hatchback. Has anyone attempted this on the gen 4 Prius?

If not, I'd appreciate any help people can give in finding the appropriate strut to replace the stock struts. I haven't been able to find the right one on the internet yet.

Here's the info I've gathered so far on what's currently on the Prius

    Stabilus 7R
    Lift-O-Mat
    221338 0540N 324/15 A31

    Toyota Part #
    68950-0W860

    Diameter of:
    Shaft 8mm
    Tube 19mm

    Force: 540 N

Current length: 446.5mm (as measured from center of connector to center of connector)

I want to reduce the length by 40mm

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help

One easy thing you can do: cushion the part on the garage door that's hitting, it'll reduce or stop scratching.

I've done the deed about 4 times, never the wife, always me.

Cushioning helps, but the garage door typically derails, lol.

    Here's what I've done:

I tried cushioning. But I still need to be careful, the contact point could be the hinges. The solution works for me, but doesn't work for my kids who wouldn't be so careful when opening the hatch.

Yeah our garage has a 10' ceiling, luckily. The only thing that hits is the trailing arm. Understand your situation now.

Wasn't there a thread where someone put a cord on, tied to each end of the strut mountings to limit the extension ?

I did that too but wife found it ugly. So it's only temporary. I taped sections of the cord so it would fold nicely and keep in place.

That's the idea, black cord would be less visible. I was thinking of something along the lines of a single cord (one on each side of the hatch) with loops on the ends, hooked over the little ball joints that the struts fit on to.

I ended up buying 1/8" black bungee/para cord off of Amazon.

Made a loop and kept tying it smaller till I got the limit I wanted. The loop is better so I can take it off easily if I want the full extension on the door.

    Put one on each strut.

Seems to work and barely can see it

Here we have the real solution. It's safer, easier to load, and makes for faster getaways. If anyone gives you grief about it, just ask "Does batman ever back out from the bat cave?"

^ That would actually work champion for us, except I'm pretty challenged, backing into spots, lol. Maybe something I should try.

My hatch hits my door too. I have a couple of scratches on it now, many foul words have been said. I'm hoping adding a backup camera last weekend will help me to start backing in now.

why is it easier to back out than back in? going out, there's no target. much easier. same with a parking space.

Yeah, and maybe innate: nobody likes backing into a black, forbidding hole...
