    Some may paint him as partisan, but he got it right on all accounts. Highest mpg (gasoline) and mpge (electricity).

    Volt has its own merits and depending on ones needs may be the "better" choice. But the Prime hits best in category on all the issues Lee Jay mentioned.

    Prime total range is 640 miles while Volt is 420. Prime has much better MPGe and much better MPG.

    My trips are all 25 miles or less or 300 miles or more.

    Volt won't fit my people or my stuff much less both at the same time.

    Like I said earlier, I don't own either yet. I am still trying to decide. I went to the Toyota dealer today to look at the Prius, but they didn't have exactly what I was looking for. I remain bi-partisan when it comes to the two. I went then to the Chevy dealer is next door, owned by the same person and they only had one Volt. Again, not the one I was looking for. I own two Chevy trucks and a Corolla, the best car I ever had. I am not a "one brand" person. I drive what I like.

    Neither is available as a choice. I will see if I can put it in the comment section. I had to choose something, so other EV was the choice I made.

    OK - ignore that I drive a Volt because it was only used to drive home the point about more EV range being the most important economic factor - even above efficiency at higher MPG(e)s for those who need range to stay mostly EV. The point could be made just as easily for an i3 REx that I don't own if my commute was substantially longer.

    Not enough EV Range was a valid answer to the poll. My post was never intended as a sales pitch.

    I appreciate that the Prime has the capacity to bring a large population into the EV fold that never would have considered one before. I hope that it is sold in all 50 states, which is why I never considered a PiP in 2014. Cali is not the entire US PHEV market.

    Hopefully a battery upgrade will be offered in this or a similar sized vehicle in the near future.

    so you've already decided.

    more ev range is not necessarily better, depending on your typical commute. what you fail to understand is that there is a cost to carrying around a battery you rarely use.

    If you read post 84, it will answer your question. Volt over Prime-yes. Volt vs. Prius 4- undecided.

    New to me, but GOOD news.

    I was hoping to get some more of them on the streets!!!
    I'll post a sighting-in-the-wild and maybe do back-to-back test drives.

    My CFO got the last new car, back in '12, so I'm up to bat for the next one in the next few years.
    I'm getting pre-tax kickback pricing for the Volt reeeeeeally close to 30K after dickering.

    Let the competition begin!!!!

    but this isn't a gen 4 lift back thread. why would you consider a lift back if you are looking at a volt?

    Some favor better short distance range than total range. So the optimum vehicle is different for different people and whether or not they have a 2nd vehicle for long trips. My 2012 PiP can go almost anywhere and I don't mind doing long trips in it. My truck can go in some places where the PiP can or should not, but I dont' like riding in it for too long. I like the Model S for long trips as the ride and trip is much more enjoyable than the PiP, but I can't take it on bad gravel roads that cross washes or don't have superchargers or destination chargers.

    Why not get 2 cars?

    Already have three. My wife often uses hers and it gets half the mileage of the Prius. My first goal is a car we can use for most everything including family road trips that gets us as far as possible off petroleum. I like continuous improvement. My cars have got the following mileage: 13, 20, 32, 52 and the next one should be better. Prime may average over 100. A BEV is a failure with current range and infrastructure even if I were willing to spend the money on a Model S, which I'm not. Volt has lousy mileage, range, reliability and storage space for people and cargo, all at a high cost. Prime Advanced will net less than my 2004 Prius cost me, even at MSRP, and Toyota's reliability record is outstanding. I'm still waiting for my first unplanned maintenance on my 2004 with 150,000 miles. Can't beat that and it's another reason not to get a Tesla which has terrible reliability and my local repair facility is across town.

    I have always had great luck with all of my Toyota's. I have never considered a Volt even won more EV range. It's strictly my opinion and my money that I'm spending but I feel Toyota build a higher quality car over Chevy
