I just bought my new 2016 Prius Two Eco about 6 weeks ago and I've been loving it! I'm usually by myself so the "Airbag Off" light is always on, though I noticed this morning and afternoon, the "Passenger" light that has always been illuminated above those words is no longer on. Does this mean there is something wrong with the airbag system?

The airbags should be left on unless you happen to be using a child seat in the front of the car (which you should avoid doing if at all possible anyway). I'm not sure what you mean by "passenger" light? There are on/off lights under the passenger airbag text...

No, I'm not trying to turn the airbag off or the light off or anything. It's just previously the word PASSENGER was also illuminated (as it should be with no passenger in the seat), but now it's not, which made me wonder if the driver' airbag was also now off.

I don't recall the word "PASSENGER" being lit. I think it's printed/etched to be visible if you're looking straight at it during the daytime but otherwise visually unobtrusive. The lights immediately in its vicinity are for the passenger air bag on/off and the passenger seatbelt reminder.

There is a separate icon for indicating an SRS air bag system fault. (Looks like a deployed air bag.) Unlike the passenger seat, the driver air bags are always active unless there's a malfunction.

Thanks! Concerning that I seem to be having hallucinations now but at least the car is good to go!

3rd gen's are similar: if there's nobody in the passenger seat, or a light child, it'll warn that the air bag is off.

As another note, when my wife was in the passenger seat it changed to airbag on not "Passenger airbag on". So im not sure when the passenger symbol lights up if at all. I only notice it when the sun is shining into the car from behind.

Those lights are pertaining the passenger air bag on/off status though. Here's an excerpt from our 2010 Manual:

Oooohh...... neato. My Prius doesn't have that switch, just a sensor in the seat that confirms the weight of the passenger and the car decides if the airbag is on or off. I believe this is called an "advanced air bag." You can get an airbag on/off switch installed in your car in the US (I think most cars have switches available, probably just whatever they use overseas) but you need to complete some paperwork with the NHTSA first.

Yes i understand. I was stating that whether the passenger seat is empty or occupied the passenger light will not light up, only the airbag on or airbag off light.
