Is the engine knock discussed elsewhere harmful?

    i'm not frustrated. it's just that this problem has been ongoing since gen 3 first came out, and other than an intake manifold change (which didn't work) toyota hasn't been able to figure it out. hopefully the gen 4 engine is better.

    trollbait - we need your expertise on this question.

    Isn't a 'knock' another term for pre-ignition?
    In the 'old days,' a knock was cured by using higher octane gas. Pre-ignition occurs when the fuel air mixture ignited prematurely during the compression stroke. It was a common problem in high compression engines using low grade gasoline.

    Just a layman's thought .... I'd bet that a long term 'knock' would be harmful.
