Winter is coming and I was afraid of the battery dying so I changed it. All measurements were made at 15 degrees celsius. As a reference, my multimeter measures Costco Kirkland batteries at 12.3V in store.

    - Old OEM battery purchase date: July 2012
    - Old OEM battery off voltage with car off: 12.23V
    - Old OEM battery with car headlights on: 11.9V
    - Old OEM battery with car on: 14.79V

Since I live in Canada, I bought a new MotorMaster Eliminator AGM Ultra battery. It costs $199.99 CAD with a $20 core recycle charge plus tax. It has a 5 year replacement warranty with 9 year prorated warranty. It should have better CCA then the OEM one.

    - AGM battery voltage (measured in store): 12.45V
    - AGM battery not refundable if terminal shows signs of scratches or usage

    Refer to attached pictures. 20161118_161715.jpg

OEM battery is on the left. I snapped the photos in a hurry.

The MotorMaster battery was a direct drop in. The OEM vent elbow seems to fit.

Does a charger really do much? The voltage drops back down shortly after.

Good send off. That initial voltage is a bit low; might have been sitting a while. 3~4 amp smart charger's the best option. If you don't have one don't sweat it.

the voltage will drop to whatever condition the battery is in. on a new battery, it should charge up to 13+ and hold in the high 12's, or i would return it. what's the build date?

Build dates are often coded. IIRC Canadian Tire puts sticker on them upon receipt, to at least keep stock in order.

Not bad for an AGM. An OEM replacement is about $200 as well. (I think I was quoted a little higher than that!)

Got mine for $170 plus the $20 back from the returned old battery (it's not a charge it's a rebate for the value of the lead), plus they were having a sale at the time and I got a $50 certificate to use in the store. So I combined the $20 rebate and the $50 certificate and purchased a "Genius" charger/maintainer, which was -also- on sale. Got it for about $40 out of pocket.
Note to Americans, as Canadians we get to pay more for most products. It's a benefit of living in Canada. ;)

A charger is a must. The hatch on ours sat open for about 6 hours yesterday; a read of the voltage showed it down to 12.43 volts. Hooked up my CTEK 4.3 overnight, it's showing 13.22 volts this morning. That's way high due to surface charge, will drop back down to around 12.75 in a day, but an example of why a decent smart charger is invaluable.

Also determining and addressing the cause of the open hatch for an extended period of time will help extend the batteries longevity:).

Wife got distracted while unloading after a Costco run. I've done my share too: once left the driver's door hanging open for 18 hours.

Thanks for that. Their current Prius battery is still called "Eliminator", the badging is a little different, but the specs maybe the same. Up to $225 now. Just for giggles I'll check with dealership, see what they're asking for the Yuasa or whatever it is now. I'd suspect it's over $300.

It's holding up well, even though, I don't drive the car every day.

UPDATE: 7/27/2021: Canadian Tire had a $90 store credit promotion, so I decided to buy/replace my 12V battery as it is now 4.5 years old. I sort of regretted replacing it as it still looked like it would still last. It was just too much of a hassle to return everything.
    • old battery 12.29V while in the car
    • old battery 12.40V after out of car sitting for a week
    • new battery 12.39V, measured at store (red logo)
    • new battery 12.33V after it was installed in car
The new battery cost $249.99 + $20 core charge + tax. The new battery has a red logo instead of a blue one. It seems the price of the battery has gone up by a whopping 25%.

Canadian Tire no longer offers the 9-year prorated warranty. It is just a 5 year replacement warranty now. Everything else is the same, the battery is still a direct fit for the Gen3 Prius.

For you folks in the US, this post is not for you. Canadian Tire is for us Canadians.
