i guess. i just can't wrap my head around driving long distances and searching for chargers. maybe that's a hindrance to public reception of bev's.

Incredibly useful for testing, diagnosis, and car prep.
As a public network, I agree, it is a poor placement.

yes, they would need one i suppose, unless 120v will suffice.

Difficult to diagnose issues with a car's DC charging on 120AC :p

It's about having a car charged for a potential buyer to test drive.

bolt won't charge on 120? do bev's arrive at the dealership with a full charge? the pip came empty.
the second part of the equation is having someone plug them in.

With the moving of the car on and off transport and into the dealer lot, I don't see how a BEV can arrive full.
The Bolt can charge on 120, but if empty, it will take over a day to reach full charge.
Bob mentioned diagnosing DC charging problems, but I suspect the real reason GM is having dealers install the charger is to weed out those dealers that want a Bolt on the lot as a lure to get customers in to sell other cars too, from those that actually want to sell the Bolt. CCS ability is just an option on the Bolt.

My Volt was fully charged when I looked at it, the PIP was not charged at all.

It's not uncommon for ev's to be left around half charged between manufacturer & dealership. That's the safest place to leave traction packs for greatest longevity. If the dealer knows you're on their way (& they ½way know what they're doing) they should be filling it up to the top. Otherwise until delivery that's where you ought to find it. ymmv

I was at the dealer dropping off a friend of mine that was picking up his car. A salesman asked if I would like to check out a Volt and I picked out a brown one in the back. It was fully charged when I took it for a test drive. The salesman said GM requires a full charge and a full tank of gas. At the Toyota dealer, when I asked about a test drive, they couldn't find one that was charged and they had at least 14-15 of them. One of the other members here bought a PiP at the same place and IIRC, he went through the same thing.

my guy told me it was all charged up, so i drove over, and it was just the hv portion, he didn't know the difference. still, i have to wonder what toyota is telling dealers to do when they have a lot full of slow movers.

do you have any mfg info? toyota does not recommend leaving the battery half full.

Are you talking about the prime &/or pip? Isn't it just like a non plug-in? After all, some will just buy 'em for the stickers & never charge. That would mean other than the unusable low end buffer, it might always stay at a low SOC. My reading on extended ev storage is on gen1 rav, models s & x, leaf, & fiat. Others mmv i suppose. Here' s a general lithium storage rule of thumb link:
How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries - Battery University
That kind of follows pretty much what I had previously read for ev storage.

i'm talking pip and prime. toyota just copied the pip manual to prime. maybe that's why toyota is so concerned about developing better battery chemistry before introducing a bev.
