I just got a reconditioned battery pack with gen 3 modules with a 1 year warranty put in my 08 Prius last month. Last night the hybrid warning and red triangle lights came on and the battery exhaust fan started blowing at max. I used tech stream and got error codes p3000 and p3021. I then took it to the place o had the warranty with. After running diagnostics, the guy said it was strange because the battery block that showed a problem was not showing any signs of being a problem and the voltage on all the blocks was good. He said he thinks their may be a problem with a relay, but it's hard to tell. After resetting the codes he said to continue to drive like normal and call him back if it throws more codes. While driving home it functioned normally. Does his diagnosis sound legit, or should I press harder to get the battery replaced?

That battery needs to be repaired again. It's obviously not a good module that was put in.

It ended up with the warning codes again. I called the guy back and he said bring it back in the morning to get the battery replaced

What service did you use for the repair?

A place called Dave's final touch. He specializes in Prius. They are 90 % of what he works on.

Replacing used battery cells with used battery cells = used battery cells.

Doesn't matter if they call it reconditioned, refurbished or rebuilt. Paint the battery cover orange, green or hot pink. Have special fairy dust applied, say a chant or sprinkle it with holy water.

They give you the warranty to help bring in the sale and play the odds that it won't fail within the time period. If it does then they only have to eat 1-2 hours labor so its worth the risk to them.

I know the pack is used cells. I bought the Prius with a rebuilt battery pack with 1 month of the warranty remaining on it. That is why I went back to the same place. The shop replaced the battery with another rebuilt one using gen 3 modules. They also extended the warranty to a year from the new date I had the new pack put in.

I realize the used packs are not as good as a new one. However, I have now had the battery swapped out twice at no cost to me other than the time it took to drive there and have it swapped out. The place I had it done at said they have done over 200 battery swaps in the past year, and only a total of 9 failed within the warranty period. Unfortunately I had the distinction of being the only person to have 2 failed batteries in that time frame.

All in all I am pleased with the shop. I know some places can get picky about a warranty if you transfer ownership, but this place had no problem with it at all, and they also extend the warranty any time a swap takes place. Seems to me that they stand by their work.
