The large German organization ADAC (known for statistics focusing on safety and dependability) has introduced a new comprehensive emission test (the EcoTest) where both CO2, CO, HC, NOx, PM and PN are measured. The vehicles are measured both using version 5.3 of the "Worldwide harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Cycle" as well as on a high speed (130km/h) and a quick acceleration test.

Only the purely electric BMW i3 outperforms the latest Prius in the new ADAC Ecotest where both real life emissions and fuel economy is measured for a combined score:
    Link (in German):

    Verschärfter ADAC EcoTest | ADAC

Click the picture in the link for the full list.

    Top 5:

    - Only BMW i3 (electric) receives full marks because of the clean (d'uh) emissions and efficiency.
    - Prius loses some points due to both efficiency and emissions, but still comes in above all but the i3!
    - Nissan Leaf leaves a larger CO2 footprint than Prius, resulting in 3rd. place.
    - A gas powered Skoda comes fourth due to the clean nature of gas powered propulsion and relatively good fuel economy.
    - Yaris hybrid in fifth place is similar to Prius C.

The lower half of the list is dominated with diesels and turbo petrol cars. So much for modern turbos being comparable to hybrids... Autobild in Germany (where I discovered the report) had to do a lot of journalistic acrobatics in order not to mention the stellar performance by hybrids!

This is wonderful. ADAC actually is saying right in the face of the German automobile industry they "suck!".
And that their cars, not only pollute, and cheat, but also consume way more than they pretend to.
To see the Prius next to the i3 (the electric only version no other!) is quite fantastic.

BTW: this is the article in Autobild where the new ADAC tests show up - not a word about Hybrids or the Prius in spot #2 - they clearly hate hybrids and hate the fact that not the German car industry managed to be up there, without using other than an electric vehicle. If the Prius were German made, there would be compliments and words of merit everywhere...

    Prius deserves Nobel Prize probably.
What a clean car! Gen4 is amazing, as were the Gen2 and 3.

do not know...PP, might get a v as I like space, or a used PiP.
Right now we have 3 child (grandkid) seats across on the Gen2, which may be hard to replicate.
Also we get lots of wet cheerios on the seats, so maybe we wait until the wet cheerio period is over.
With high car taxes in NoVA, certified used looks good to me, so I am always looking at what looks good used in 3 years. that's new today.

Well, I know of a good salesman/dealer combination in Manassas.
My son has a 2015 Prius v and he is reasonably pleased but I think, coming from a Gen 2 Prius, he wished his gas mileage was a little better.

Every day I have this car, I like it better than the day before.

I think a little national pride can be healthy but I also recognize that we need world wide trade these days. We aren't going to progress if we can't accept the best of the best no matter where it comes from.

The truth is out. Love it. I just posted the ADAC link on pistonheads website in the UK, where most forum members seem to believe that German cars (especially the newest 'cleanest' diesels) are far superior on emissions and economy to anything else in the entire universe.

This section of text from ADAC that I posted will make them rather upset at their choice of vehicle..

"Of the 26 tested diesel vehicles, only two models are convincing. The Mercedes E220 d 9G-Tronic (7th place) as well as the BMW 118d Urban Line Steptronic (9th place) will make it with four environmental stars.

"Our new measurements confirm that most diesel models emit too many emissions under realistic conditions, regardless of the exhaust gas purification technology used," said Reinhard Kolke, head of the ADAC Technical Center. "The results are an appeal to the manufacturers of diesel engines to use the exhaust technology so that they can effectively reduce emissions across all operating conditions, and the two diesel models are in the top ten to make this technically feasible."

If these results can be replicated in other countries, then Toyota should persuade policy makers in city governments to give Gen 4 owners EXTRA perks for using them in urban centres. I vote for free donuts. Whoops, I meant doughnuts (I forgot for a second that I live in England)

Ok, make that free food & free parking.

If you eat too many doughnuts your fuel economy will decline.

Should be noted that this means (compressed) natural gas, not gasoline/petrol. (Here in the US, "gas" means "gasoline".)

Also, interestingly, I suspect some of it is due to the general tuning of the car: European Review: Škoda Octavia G-TEC Natural Gas

The talk of poor low-end power, having to drive it like a naturally aspirated 1.6, and overall being slower than the 1.2 TSI tells me that they're running fairly low boost. A lot of the problem with turbocharged gasoline engines is that they're running such high boost that even in normal driving, they end up running rather rich for the sake of staying cool and avoiding detonation.

Poor performance had always been a problem with gaseous fueled engines, even in a Jag back in the mid sixties. A private engineer conversion, not factory.

As an electrical engineer, when someone says engine, I think internal combustion. When someone says motor, I think electric. I can't tell you how uncomfortable it is for me to watch car guys on TV call an ICE a motor. They do it all the time. I suppose technically, it is correct but it doesn't sound right. Same goes for gas. I think compressed. Say petrol, petro, or gasoline and I think fluid. My family considers me certifiable.

You are correct, and when someone -reads- the Prius owners manual it states it quite clearly. ;)

Advertising also says you own a movie when you purchase a DVD.
You do not have the rights of ownership, though.
Seems like false advertising to me...
