We have more to bring with us on our holiday travels than can comfortably fit in our 2007/2nd Gen Prius. Does anyone have recommendations for (or experiences, good or bad, with) roof storage containers? Has anyone used a trailer hitched up to the car?

It depends on how much extra storage you need. If what you need will fit in a large plastic storage tote, then I'd recommend installing a hitch (about $150 installed) and a trailer hitch cargo carrier (well under $100). Then choose the plastic tote(s) or other storage solution that that fits your needs.
If you have one near you, Harbor Freight has very inexpensive hitch cargo carriers.

I'd assume much of these are gifts? How about shipping them?

I have a hitch and cargo carrier on my CMax which are very handy for traveling but that solution is several hundred dollars.

Yes. We mount a Sears X-Cargo on Thule roof rails. Been using the setup for vacations since 2008 on my 2009 Touring Edition. Robs you of 20% to 25% gas mileage, but better than owning a minivan! Drive carefully, as wind can be an issue.

roof rake costs too much and robs the mpg. go with trailer hitch and cargo rack which can be easily installed yourself for all-in cost as little as $200.
