Prime may start ICE in EV mode if Windshield Defogger switched on

    If it's in AUTO, I've seen it do "windshield+feet" mode occasionally. If it's cold (-20°C or lower), it usually just keeps it at the feet. (although even at 0 to +12°C, it'll keep it it at FOOT mode).

    But either way, it's circulating drier air. The Gen 3 does have a humidity sensor.


    Probably but then I wouldn't be able to see (and at -20°C or colder, moisture will freeze on the inside of the windows so it'll take even longer, or never to clear it compared to liquid state).

    Agree. Unlike the PiP the Prime has a heat pump and heating will start if called for by temp set in this mode. Defrosting will be more effective with heated incoming air.
    Only in very sever fog/mist on the windshield the defogger will be required.

    I read the Climate Control section first and that's what I quoted in my post. See P87 of the user manual, if my memory serves.

    The remote a/c quote was from a completely different part of the manual. Page 509 maybe. They do not belong together in the manual and are unrelated.

    I am v sceptical that the Defogger will not be needed at least here in the UK, especially in icy conditions where there is Frost on the outside of the windshield or maybe also when there is high humidity.

    I echo the comment that it is safety critical be be able to see where you are going!

    My wife's drive to work is 2 miles, so having the ICE start to run the Defogger will mean the ICE running it's warm up cycle for much of that distance and the full EV mode will be pretty much redundant. It won't be happening for us.

    I just hope that this is one of those very cautious statements on Toyota.s part that in most circumstances does not actually happen. Otherwise for us the Prime would be a waste of money. Full stop.

    I hope someone will advise us on their experience of this once they have their Prime delivered.

    Defrost mode is needed when there is fog on the inside of the window. When it's on the outside, just heat on the window will do the job.

    Ok, true re Frost on the outside. Don't know what the car does with the humidity sensor info though in terms of controlling the Defogger, but we will still need the Defogger when there is mist on the in inside, and we get that a lot in the winter, when the car is cold.

    If the car has time to pre-heat while on charge, 10 minutes of heat with fresh air should do both quite effectively when no one is in the car.

    With the hybrids, the A/C liht one means the climate control will make use of the compressor as it sees fit. With heat coming from the ICE, this isn't an issue.

    The Prime uses the heat pump in EV mode for heat, which leaves it without a way to dehumidify. So it could switch the HP to dehumidify, and then use waste heat from the ICE if needed.

    And this is all just the long way of saying your experience Toyota hybrids climate control doesn't apply to their heat pump equipped PHEV.
    The solution is easy. Don't heat the cabin.:)

    The front defogger likely defaults to dehumidifying when turned on though. So even if the issue is outside frost, the ICE might turn on in the Prime.

    Cabin preconditioning will help with inside fog, if the fogging is an issue at the start of the trip. In my experience, interior fogging is more of an issue while it is raining out. This means the fogging can happen at anytime during a trip.

    If it is outside why use the defogger? With the prime, you will have other means of heating the windshield without starting the ICE, foot/defrost mode.

    My Energi will display a notice that the ICE will engage when the Defrost button is pressed but...... it doesn't necessarily come on since it's based on the set temp. Ford also utilizes a MAX Defrost button that automatically activates the ICE.

    Pre-conditioning in the garage and cracking a window BEFORE or at the very first signs of fogging helps too and with three people in the car here in cool, humid south Texas winters I can drive about 5 miles before needing defogging.

    I was replying to the use of the defogger to remove or loosen frost and ice.
    What offer means of heating the windshield beyond the climate control are there?

    I think that's meant as, aiming output at the defrost vents instead of using defrost mode?

    In any case, this is a good use case for an electric heated windshield, which plenty of other manufacturers have...

    Quite! Just what i've been thinking! It would add to the cost a little, but then so do all these high tech safety electronics, and as I said, seeing where you are going is a fairly basic safety requirement!

    i also was hoping for the electric windshield, but hopefully the heat pump solves most of the problems.

    For those who now have Primes, are you finding that the ICE starts when you don't want it to, in certain circumstances?

    How much does this detract from your pure EV experience and fuel savings?

    Once the ICE starts, does it take long to go through the warm up cycle before it stops again?

    I'm not a Prime owner, but I did test drive one twice.

    First, at low power levels, it's not all that easy to even detect when the engine starts and stops. It's that quiet. At high power/RPM, it's easily audible.

    I found the transition between Ev only driving and engine-assisted driving to be entirely seamless. The throttle response is the same and there's no detectable jerk or glitch when the engine starts and stops, even at high power levels.

    In other words, it drives like an Ev whether the engine is running or not.

    I'm more concerned about how much benefit the Prime would be for us over the Gen4.

    My wife drives just 2 miles to work and most of our journeys will be within the 25 mile EV range.

    But if the ICE starts when we don't really want it to, and does that often enough on V short journeys, and stays on long enough through its warm-up cycle, to increase fuel costs unnecessarily, this may for us make the extra cost and smaller cargo space of the Prime a less attractive trade-off.

    So that's why I would really like to get a handle on how much in owners' real world experience the ICE comes on and for how long, in Pure EV mode, when it's not really wanted.
