I had the usual symptoms of failing battery in my 2007 Prius (original battery), so I bought the Optima D51R yellow top from Amazon, and replaced it according to youtube instructions. It was easy (not as easy as just about any other car), and took about 20 minutes.
The first thing we noticed is the coolant pump sound that we heard every time we turned off the car went away! Has anyone else had this happen? A nice side benefit.
Now, 3 months later, we have had weird issues with the power button. It became unresponsive sometimes, but if we tried enough times, it would finally allow the car to start. Also, we found the radio presets and clock were off when we got back in the car in the morning.

Today I checked the 12-volt battery voltage at the jumper terminals, and got 9.6! So I went in back and checked at the battery: 12.6 volts. THEN...I found the ground wire was quite loose, where it bolts to the car. I'm sure I tightened it when installing, so this time I'm going to add a proper lock washer (thinking locktite will impede electrical flow?). I am charging the Optima with a 200ma charger, instead of my usual 10-amp charger, because it's an AGM battery, right?
What kind of charger do others use for their 12 volt battery, and is this the solution to the power button issues? Stay tuned...

I'm currently using a CTEK 4.3 (4.3 amp) charger. It is a "smart" charger, goes through charging stages, can be left on indefinitely if need be. With the Optimas they recommend the "snowflake" option, charges at slightly higher voltage I believe?

The CTEK 3300 is another I have (3.3 amp). It's similar, a bit more rudimentary, and actually a bit easier to get the hang of: less complication.

I only drive my Prius about three or four days a week, and those are mostly short trips of about 10-15 miles round trip. Is that enough to keep the battery in good condition? (I don't have a garage, so no place to plug in a charger.)

If you have the model without the smart key you should be fine. If you have the smart key you might need to turn the smart key system off (to keep the drain on 12V battery lower while sitting) if you’re not doing any longer trips for couple of weeks.

In a Prius 12V battery charging is only dependent on how long it is in ready.

My 2016 doesn't have that button.
But that sounds like a good feature, maybe it would prevent theft too.

Turning off the smart key is not applicable (or necessary) on 3rd gen and onward.

It is on a menu for Gen 4.
I do not think you need to turn it off due to battery drain unless you are going to let the car sit a month or more without driving.

trade it for a pip. oh wait, you have no place to charge.(n)

luckily for you, the gen 4 has a standard auto battery under the hood, and no worries.(y)

Meregd. Points soon for not using multi quote or posting back to back.

if the battery was 12. 6 with a loose ground, you already found the solution. no need to charge.

What menu are you referring to? Thanks.

Merged as usual. Points given out soon for doing this.

I can charge it at the shopping mall. Or at Walmart.
Or string an extension cord out the kitchen window.:ROFLMAO:

2016 is gen 4. You wrote this on gen 2 forum so of course I thought that you have gen 2.

Since he asked, I posted the relevant parts of the User Manual.
In another thread, he mentioned sleep issues. I was told reading the manual can put you to sleep.

Sometimes when you pick the settings gear, you need to scroll up to find the menu.

Thanks again. I hope I don't mess something up! :ROFLMAO: If somebody turns off the smart key operation, how do they start the car?

I believe it would be just like if the fob has a dead battery. You place the fob over the start button and can then start.
