I have a 2004 Prius. The ABS light has come on. I took it to the local Toyota dealer and the cost to get new ABS breaks is more than the car is worth. What is interesting is that the ABS light only comes on after the engine has warmed up. When I start the car in the morning, the light does not come on and does not light up during my first trip. It's only when I start the car for my second trip of the day that the ABS light comes on.

    Any idea what this means?

That shop likely wants to replace EVERYTHING in the whole brake system:
    All pads
    All rotors
    All wheel speed sensors
And maybe the proportioning valves and ABS computer too.

It is partly a matter of greed on their part and partly a matter of potential liability.
It is also possible that you really need all or most of that work done.

Check with some other shops to see if you can get ONLY the failing part replaced.

    1. Check the tire air pressure on all four tires.
    2. Find out what diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was logged by the skid control ECU. At least one DTC was logged since the ABS light is on.

I agree toget the codes first, also check your brake reservoir for fluid level

Well yes and maybe the part that is going bad won't affect the "normal" functioning of the brakes......which is what it switches to when there is ABS trouble.

BUT maybe the failing part WILL have an adverse impact on "normal" brake function too and your brakes will be unsafe.

It is a gamble that I would not take........nor suggest that anyone else take either.
