Best guess at the fix? In the month before this code went off, i cleaned the injectors. Then tight before the code went off i drained and filled oil.
2010 prius III, 193000, nightmare car that has had a bunch of issues.

Why did you have to clean injectors?

    What maintenance have you done?

It was having a misfire on the 4 hole. And btw....my mpg is down to like 30mpg now. If that helps the diagnosis.

No. Another possible help with diagnosis would be that I can drive ten or so miles before the code clicks on again. It's not immediate. And when I'm going uphill in cruise control the engine will surge and release and released Surge and release..

On the freeway I'm getting like 35 MPG. City I'm in the low 20s now!.

Have you cleaned the MAF or throttle body?

And the answer to the egr cleaning was no? If not, that system is worth investigating.

I haven't done anything under the hood other than what I mentioned. (Except I put head gasket stop leak in the coolant which solved the misfire in #4)

Sounds like I need to clean the MAF, and check the EGR. Any other thoughts before I rip into this thing yet again? Why do you think this car would be surging every couple seconds while in cruise control going uphill?

Add air/fuel ratio sensor to the good list already started here. It's very often a player in a Toyota lean bank issue. I don't believe the EGR circuit is related to a lean code with regard to Toyota, but if your 200k mile car hasn't had the EGR circuit cleaned, it is likely affecting driveability. The surging may simply be a side effect of the car running lean and not really telling of what the issue is. A totally wonky a/f sensor can run the car in limp mode but I guess I'd suspect a vacuum leak with steady throttle surging.

But honestly, the head gasket issue is likely terminal, and the high mileage (approaching 200k and beyond) Gen 3's are trending alarmingly (my opinion) toward this failure. If you're not interested in replacing the head gasket, I'd source a salvage engine before spending too much time chasing the often elusive P0171/174. That or cut your losses with hell's Prius entirely. Back a few months a guy here took a pretty good swing at his 2010 lean code but ended up buying a Prius Plug-In.

Head gasket leak? I would save money for another engine. That one is done

I actually went to CarMax a couple days ago willing to sell at wholesale. I bought this car only 4 months ago from a guy waiving a carfax around. But CarMax showed me that there was a dealer auction of this car right before I bought this...and structural damage was reported. So I was tricked.lol. CarMax offered me 1500 bucks. That's when I realized....I'm screwed. My only hope is to drive the value out of this car. If I can limp it for a year or two, then hey, that was the same loss as making payments, right? If I dump it now, I'm literally out the 5500 I paid for the car, minus whatever someone gives me. That's a drawn out way of saying....I'm interested in band aid fixes until this car dies the miserable death it deserves.haha

I have intermittently had the P0171 code over the last 25k miles. It comes and goes. I have cleaned the MAF sensor since the last time it appeared about 5 months ago. Haven't seen it since ;).

Sounds like you got a Prius with some issues. The head gasket sounds terminal, but used engines can be had from the salvage yard with low miles. There is an auto recycler by me and they have plenty of used parts:).

If you keep the right mindset, there are some repairs that can be done and you can make your Prius last a long time ;).

    Keep us posted(y).

2010 prius with 193000 miles and head gasket issues. I don't know, but this sounds like it'll be hard to unload

Get a new, used engine or better yet both that and the transaxle.

Out here on the west coast there are plenty of auto recyclers. In LA I believe there are some. I live near the Bay Area and Sacramento and east of Sac in Rancho Cordova there are several Toyota, Lexus and Scion recyclers (they are off of Recycle Road:)). The one I use is rancho toyota recycling. There is also tlsautorecycling.com. They have many Prius parts. Or if you look on Ebay, one can be had for $1500.

Might be a couple of ways to extract more life and value out of your Prius (y)

Great idea. Ill take a solid shot at the cheap/free fixes before i go that route. Amazingly, the head gasket stop leak stuff worked great and instantly. Been a couple thousand miles since then.

    Which stop leak: Lucas oil?

I have used their stop leak on our 98 4Runner power steering system (257 k miles and still going strong). Seem to make a good Products and has saved me replacing the rack, like the dealer wanted to do.

If you are doing the egr system, start with the egr pipe as this will tell you your the next steps: if carbon deposited up, intake manifold and valve should be investigated. This is all free except for your time;).
