I noticed one of my options on my 2017 Prius Two with the non navigation radio is Software Update. Are updates user accessible, or is this dealer only? How do you find out if updates are available?

Are you talking about Entune updates?

When we bought our car I put the Entune app on my iPhone and subsequently I have had one or two updates to the car Entune apps via cellular (I think). Of course I never use the Entune apps on either the car or iPhone now...

The Trim Two does not have Entune or Navigation. Just plain Bluetooth & radio.

On trims with Nav, the software update comes with the Nav update, downloaded from the My Toyota web page. Maybe there is a software only update on there when you register, for non Nav models. If not then maybe the dealer does it at service time.
It may be worth registering with My Toyota and see if there is an update on there.
The software update was for the Nav system, Gracenote (CD) and maps, so really only the Gracenote update would apply to non-Nav trims, it could be that you don't get updates for just that.

It's in the radio, Setup/General. You can see in the pics I also went into Update and Update History.

Thanks. As far as I can see, we have the same versions. The version window also has a scroll bar.
I will check but my best guess is we would put the update on a USB device & plug it in. The manual does not mention the Update menu.

I emailed my salesman. Let's see what his reply states.

I thought we have to go into the dealership and pay an insane amount of money to update the satnav, but maybe that's a regional variation...

Here in the UK we get 3 years free updates with the Prius Nav, downloadable from the My Toyota website, after that it's £109 (current price) and still downloadable from the website.

It's the software that recognises Cds when you insert them into the car which shows the tracks and album art (cover) on your screen. It's updated from a database of CDs on the internet.

My salesman responded and did not have the answer. He suggested I call the service department.
According to the service department, you need to bring the car in so they can update it.
It seems strange to me there is a user menu item that can only be used by the service department.

Thanks for checking. Did they say if/how/when we can find out if any updates are available?

No, but I did not ask. They kept saying "Just bring it in" even though I told them I am 150 miles away.

kithmo: There's at least three unrelated software platforms used for Toyota stereos in the Prius and some other models (and then at least one more used in some low-end models in the US, and another borrowed from Mazda for the Scion iA, which is a Mazda2, but that's beside the point).

In North America, Toyota uses the Entune system. (It's still called Entune in cars without the Entune App Suite and navigation.)

In Europe, Toyota uses the Toyota Touch 2 system.

In Japan, they use something else entirely, and I can't recall what it's called now.

I just called Entune customer support at Toyota. From what he told me, the Entune Audio, which is the lowest version of three versions, that's what I have, doesn't use software updates, only firmware updates. That seems a little strange to me but that's what he said. I read him one of the version numbers and he said there is an update available. He said I can always find out if there is an update available by calling them. So I guess I'll ask my dealer to do any available updates when I go in for my free services.

Please keep us informed. I do not trust my local dealer so I will wait if there are no critical bug fixes.
I would be interested if there are any Release Notes documenting what is patched & new features.

Right, the system with no apps or nav or Scout GPS Link is just called Entune Audio.
