2007 Prius - Headlight(Passenger Side)

Before you spend any money, you might want to switch the bulbs......to see if the trouble follows one bulb or stays on the same side.
This could be a sign of a ballast failing or a loose connection on one side.

Note: Do not touch the bulbs with bare fingers. The oil from your skin can cause them to fail prematurely.
And do not touch them immediately after being ON. They get EXTREMELY HOT.

 

There was a rash of bad D4Rs when the 2006 first came out. I thought the 2007s were OK, but maybe not. I'd recommend replacing both bulbs with new Philips brand D4Rs. There are a lot of cheaper knockoffs, but they die quickly. My original D4Rs only lasted about a year, but their replacements are still working after another 9 years.

The original story was that you had to pull the bumper and remove the entire assembly. About a 4 hour job at $125+ an hour. Plus $300 per bulb, plus a lot of replaced ballasts. $48 a bulb is a bargain, and Carolyn at Luscious Garage does the job in 3 minutes. I 2nd this. Im dealing with the same thing right now on the drivers side. My light stayed on for about a minute. I replaced the ballast and now it stays on for 2 1/2 minutes. I dont know if the ballast i received is also bad or its something else.

I also replaced the bulb but I doubt its that or that my old bulb was bad. Either a light comes on or it doesnt. The fact that it comes on at all tells me its the ballast. Its been like 2 weeks between getting the wrong part and now this seemingly defective one. I just want my lights working and Im seriously considering an after market replacement. Those ballast's are like 60$ each

 

HID bulbs do fail the way you've experienced. They go out, but start up again, for a while. Low quality HID bulbs can fail quickly. Fingerprints that haven't been cleaned off cause even a good HID bulb to fail in short order. If the bulb lights at all, the ballast is probably OK.

 

I ordered some new bulbs, I just found out that 2006 and below (mines 2004) use D2R bulbs and I had gotten D4R ones. I dont know how much of a difference that makes but I saw D4R are mercury free. The thing is when the lights initially come on you can hear the humming noise coming from the ballast. When it goes out though no humming.
Hopefully this solves it, Im starting to get annoyed but on the positive side I can pull the headlight assembly in 2 mins now.

 

2004/2005 HID use D2R. 2006-2009 HID use D4R. The ballasts are different (I think the mercury free D4R requires a higher voltage startup).

I'm currently trying to figure out how to convert my 2006 HID to projectors. It appears that I can use a Morimoto D2S conversion assembly, but with D4S bulbs and the original D4R ballasts. Part of the conversion involves cooking the headlight assembly in the kitchen oven while the wife isn't around...

 

Put the old (original ballast) back in and the new D2R bulb and viola, the lights are working!!! Note to all D4R do not work with D2R ballast's

 

Islandboy, are you saying the Toyota Part No. 85967-24010 will work with a D2s bulb as well as a d4s bulb?

 

Sorry for the delayed response, I havent logged in here in awhile. I dont know if a D2S will work, I would guess not. I dont really recall the specifics but I ended up using the stock ballast with the different bulb. I dont think bulbs and ballast are interchangeable e.g. D4 ballast with D2 bulb or D2 ballast with D4 bulb. I think that the problem I ran into. Once again I dont recall the specifics but I do remember the d2 bulb working and not the D4
