I have the same situation, when I get off work I drive to the side streets for about a mile at 25 MPH so ICE stays quiet.:D

Does anyone know at what cold temperature the ICE is required to start, even though the Li-ion battery was at say 90 % full charge when the Prime is parked outside for a 9 hour workday, and there is no electrical outlet to plug into to keep the battery at full charge and warm by using the programable Li-ion battery heater as the last part of the charge cycle?

I would like to use a Prime as a pure EV for very short commutes, even though I would not have an electrical outlet, except at home. Sounds ike the Prime can meet this expectation in warm weather, but not in the cold. Does anyone have specific experience regarding how cold it has to be to loose the ability to use a Prime as a pure EV vehicle? Thanks.

As far as the owners manual says, Ev driving may be cancelled:

●When the temperature of the hybrid system is low.
●When the heater is switched on when the outside temperature is below
    about 14°F (-10°C).
●When the windshield defogger switch is pressed. (→P. 491, 501)
●When the system determines that the gasoline engine needs to be started.
The gasoline engine may also operate in circumstances other than those
    listed above, depending on conditions.

Unfortunately, many of those statements aren't very specific.

That doesn't answer your question, but...

I noticed nobody's mentioned when travelling in EV mode only for 124 miles the ICE kicks in (from 2012-2015 PIP manual) It's probably true for the Prime also. My experience is if you have all climate controls off including front defroster (rear defroster is ok, won't turn on ICE)and I drive 25 MPH or less for about a mile and temperature is above 14 degrees Fahrenheit ICE won't kick in.:D

It is, though when I asked, the response was that it's now 200 miles.

Probably because of the increased size of the traction battery:eek:

The first reply and this full list was very helpful. It tells me I can probably drive in pure EV mode to work year around but unlikely to drive home from work in EV mode in cold weather. The temperature at which I can drive home from work in pure EV is dependent on how easy I can accelerate, along with other variables. Since I work and live in a semi rural area, with a 1 mile commute, with speed limits of 35 and 45 mph EV mode might work for me 7 months of the year. Also knowing I can use the defroster to keep the ICE running once it starts is also helpful. Thank you.

i can tavel up to 11 miles in the winter without the engine coming on, at speeds up to 40 mph on fairly flat ground. it's all about the start of the trip. the battery is more sensitive and wants to switch to engine when really cold, but if you get a few miles depleted, it is more accepting of higher speeds and larger hills.

    Great info.
I have only 1 mile each way to work on perfectly flat ground, little to no traffic, and only one stop sign. So I am optimistic, that I can drive without the ICE starting one mile home after the Prime sits at work in the cold, with a nearly full charge, if I drive 35 mph or slower, with the heater off, and only accelerate very gently.

I need to confirm do you mean you can travel up to 11 miles in the winter without the engine coming on after the car sits outside not plugged in? Or is this the distance it can travel without the engine coming on after it has been plugged in overnight and has a full charge and a warm Li-ion battery?

Also for the 11 mile EV drive what was the temperature when you achieved this distance?
    Thanks

Bisco has a PIP, not a Prime, just so you know.

the most extreme i've done is let it sit outside all day at about 20 degrees, and could still drive all ev until the battery ran out, as long as it's slow and flat until the battery warms from use.

i have charged in a 40 degree garage, and driven right after in 10 degree weather, 11 miles without the engine firing. all flat, and slow. keeping the windshield clear is another matter.

also, a full battery does not like to receive significant regen when it's cold. so, a decent down hill event before you've used up much charge can fire the battery. i have a small hill about a half mile from home when i leave on my commute. probably a 40-50' drop over a couple hundred feet. below 35 degrees and above 30 mph, the ice would fire like clock work. but if i drove a mile or two to burn off some charge, it wouldn't fire.

because i have a pip, i'm assuming your experience will be better, since toyota has worked at keeping a truer ev experience.

    Bisco,
Thanks very much for your detailed explanation with your PIP.
I have your experience to help me in my Prime purchasing decision.

However, if you can mostly keep it in EV. After 10 days my average Mpg is 175. I presume that is MPGe . This includes driving up many hills, to Auburn, to Cool.
My son has a juicer installed, so that's a quick 2 hour charge at his place and he can do the same thing at my house. The juicer, Level 2 was amazingly easy to install. No need for a Electrician.

is it mpge, or just the average of gas and ev miles like the pip?

Some important improvements with the Prime, defog windows and instant heat without turning on Engine. Automatic braking is good to have on, but I cancel it with brake to get a longer glide when approaching a light.

NO that's driving in EV only. The dashboard says Average mpg. I believe Toyotas really talking about equivalent mpg average. They just drop the e
