Must get service records and even then it might pay to have a hybrid mechanic check it out. It's all about how it's been cared for.

Even though I agree, it's funny: I'm DIY changing our oil/filter every six months, doing complete brake inspections, changed transaxle fluid 3 times, preemptive underbody wax/oil treatment, regular tire rotations, and our service record:

    squat.

part receipts? but if i were buying a used car, i'd probably prefer all dealer service, even though diy is probably better. but you never know.

Yeah, that I do: complete log of what and when, and a binder of receipts, recall notices, bodywork, what have you. Virtually everything bought at Toyota parts dept too, so they have me on their computer.

Our use of quarts in gallons largely follows the US measure. I believe Natural Resources Canada is the only outfit using the British gallon.

Sorry to OP for wandering btw, this metric thing is flag-to-bull for me, lol.

$3800 US for a 2010 is a great deal! Even if it had 200k+ miles.

I have seen 2010/2011's with 300k+ that are beat to hell (some ex cabs) fetch more than that!

If it's in good shape, that's a great deal. What's a good deal depends a lot on location, but that is a low price anywhere. When I was shopping for my 2010 a year ago in the California Bay Area, a 2010 in the 143K mile range would have asking prices in the $10K USD range. That was shopping around for a full month. I ended up with a 2010 IV/solar package with 150K miles for $7250, but that was with some issues that cost me time (DIY cleaning the stink and some minor repairs) and money (making it a $9K range car). A year later, it runs like new, and looks about new too. So used California Priuses are more expensive, like everything in the state, but they also haven't been exposed to salt.

A new battery for a 2nd generation Prius is CAD$3,000. Hopefully a 3rd Gen is around the same. So even if it fails tomorrow, it's still under the $10k budget plus you essentially get a new car with that new battery.

I just stumbled upon this 2010 today for $2,995 and made me think of this thread.

2010 Toyota Prius In Park City IL - City Auto Sales

However all the pictures do not match what a 2010 should look like. I am not sure if they are even selling a 2010? I got the VIN # as JTDKN3DU3A1273504 which is a 2010 with a decent service record... but still not sure. I considered going to check it out but not sure if it's worth the 3 hours of driving for me. If someone is closer this might be a good deal.

The vehicle also has some damage on the rocker(s) and bumper(s).

The cheapest 2010 on Carfax nationwide are $5,500- $6,000 with 180,000-190,000 miles.

Many of the cheapest 2010's out there are 2-3x the price. 2010 in MS with 245k miles for $8k, 2011 in IL with 276k miles for $7.5k, 2010 in WA with 244k miles for $7k 2010 in OH with 233k miles for $8k, 2012 with 206k miles for $7k in AL
