Side mirror turn signal lights

When I replaced my German car with a fourth-generation Prius, I was sorry to lose the turn signal lights on the side mirrors, which I found valuable in heavy traffic. The Japanese and European versions of the Prius have these lights, but the U.S. version does not. For readers interested in adding these lights, I thought I’d share what I found in my research, though I decided not to attempt the modification.

According to the Prius New Car Features manual for Europe, the side turn signal light assemblies are LED x 2, 0.5 watt. The part numbers are 81730-47010 for the right side and 81740-47010 for the left side. Two-piece versions of the lower mirror cover and filler trim are also used, instead of the one-piece metalized lower covers found on U.S. vehicles. The upper mirror covers, painted to match the body, seem to be the same.

The side turn signal lights are connected in parallel with the front and rear turn signal lights, on the same TRNR and TRNL circuits through the Combination Meter Assembly as on U.S. vehicles, with the same 10 ampere HAZ fuse. The additional wires are shown in this extract from the European electrical wiring diagram, in which the Instrument Panel Junction Block Assembly is indicated with gray shading:

I expect there are also some differences in the wiring harnesses within the side mirror assemblies.

My 2016 Prius Three Touring (ZVW51L-AHXHBA), bought in California, has an Instrument Panel Junction Block Assembly with the same part number (82730-47530) as the Japanese version, so the required internal connections may be present, but there are no wires on connector 3H positions 14 or 16. Adding these wires, especially for the right side, would require more disassembly of the dashboard and door trim than I’m willing to do on a new car.

I hope this information is helpful, and if anyone decides to attempt the modification, I’d be interested to hear the results.

Thank you for posting this information. Not having any kind of side turn signal indicator on this vehicle is one of my only real complaints with the car..I'll take every safety advantage I can get. Not having this on the US model is weak sauce, as even cheap cars from other manufacturers (and from Toyota e.g scions) have it. It's a government-mandated safety feature in much of the world now, so this isn't an aesthetics-only mod by any measure.

I wanted a Prius that had the 17" wheels, foglights, and the sunroof, which for some reason wasn't possible to configure. Aftermarket sunroof installation is much more involved than some lighting and wheel mods. I'll take care of the 17" wheels in the spring (I'm using the stock 15"s for dedicated snow tires, which are fantastically effective) and I'm hoping I can find a good auto body place that will install the OEM foglights and this very turn signal setup you've proposed.

There's another thread on this forum where people have successfully retrofitted the foglights already, so the side turn-signals are the final frontier. If it's not technically possible to make the Euro mirrors work on a US spec car, I may look into having aftermarket turn signal repeaters installed where the "hybrid" badges are on the front quarter panel instead-- a friend had this aftermarket mod done to his car and the results were subtle/tasteful and effective.

I remember seeing this earlier, I too am bummed that Toyota didn't include this, I just saw one of the newer RAV4 with this and the Prius C has it standard? on their models which makes it baffling.

I had done some part research on this before and found this

    Mirror Assembly - Toyota (87940-47530)

It looks like there is a few variants, ones without signal lamp and ones with signal lamp and blind spot monitor light

but I have no idea if the wiring harness would be there, and for $350+ for both sides, that a fair chunk of change for unknowns especially in light of the wiring diagram you've provided.

or if you can pull the silver covers off and figure out wiring, it looks like can replace the bottom parts with the same part numbers you mentioned

    Signal Lamp - Toyota (81740-47010)

    Lower Cover - Toyota (87948-47410)

A lot of this is what ifs because I don't think I've seen anyone modify theirs yet

I can't imagine why you couldn't make the Euro/Asian side mirrors work on a US car. If the connections on the IPJBA are the same, which seems likely, shouldn't require anything more than pulling the interior door panels to wire it. Heck even if the block isn't usable for some reason, just tap the wires going to the existing turn signals. Shouldn't be any more challenging than installing new speakers in the doors.

Now the auto-folding mechanism, that'd take some doing. As the mode switch is built into the driver's side door console. Doubt a simple pair of wires would be workable for that one. The signals though don't seem complicated once you get past the ick factor of dismantling parts of a new car. :)

It "looks" like it's a matter of buying the parts, pull the stock mirror out and take out the "space filler" plastic and plug in the led signal part and run the wires...

Just to add some additional data points, I can confirm on my 2016 Prius Three (no BSM) there is NO additional wiring in the mirror housing. I only saw 6 total wires, 2 for the heated mirrors (cool) and I presume 4 for the mirror adjustment.

You can pop off the mirror housing pretty easy with plastic pry tools, make sure to unhook the plastic piece underneath the housing, closest to the hinge first.

Basically, its not as easy as we'd hope it would be (of course)

One would have thought that the gen4 would have included this feature.

How do you pop the mirror off?
I remember long ago I did this but can't remember the details. I think tilting the mirror down then use the plastic tool to pry up from underneath?

Also I think if you can by the signal part from U.K. You can swap them out then run the wire inside then tap into the signal wire. This was what I did for the Tundra back in the days.

Yes, I think toyota recommends you put masking tape to prevent scratches.

EDIT: notice how they specifically say:
    • Replacement type, OEM fitment * Make sure your factory stock side mirror originally have LED
    • Comes as a pair LED bar(R+L) *This does not include upper covers/housing. Only a pair of LED bar & bottom covers are included.
I think that we still have the upper housing it should be okay and we know in other posts that it is possible to wire it up

    Hey sfv41901,

I've sourced the signal mirror from ebay and am about to attempt it myself, if I were in socal, I would totally have you do it! I believe it's the same avest vertical arrow

Did you do most of the connection work for the turn signal part here? (1st picture)

What Did You Do To Gen4 Prius Today

I have a TIS 2 day subscription and have been trying to follow the diagrams on where to tap into my 2016 with ATP, no BSM.

Also, did you use any relays or just tapped directly into the turn signal relay?

Yes. All of my connections were done at the BCM with the exception of the puddle lights, these were made at the A pillar
