I usually estimate on the lower side instead of the higher side, since charging more time is fine (arriving with extra range left), but charging less time than necessary to regen enough range to get somewhere could be a problem (not making it somewhere). It also depends if the location is providing 220V or 240V as well, and whether the driver is achieving EPA efficiency or driving on the freeway. I have never paid attention to the GOM (range guess-o-meter for those reading without a Leaf) anyways since I find it to be all over the place, whereas the percentage remaining is more useful to me personally.

Here is some charging data from our Leaf today. Please note a few important factors.

    a) The initial state of charge on this station is already above 2/3 and charging voltage at the meter is 234V. The Leaf will charge faster for the first 2/3 of charging.

    b) We typically have an estimated range show of 105-110 miles, often more when mostly city driving, but have been doing lots of highway/freeway driving recently so most recently it will show 95-100 miles remaining once fully charged.

    c) We can ignore the data for the last 20 minutes of charge shown here as the charging rate has already dropped off with the battery nearing fully charged.

With the trends of the first 40 minutes of charging today (charging rate showing 25.5% per hour), charging the battery between empty to ¾ full on a more typical day for us can be extrapolated to give at least 28-29 miles of range for every hour of level 2 charging at 6.6kW.

    YMMV.

For the 2013 battery pack, what could one reasonably expect for range on a cold winter day with the base model that only has the resistance heater? (don't forgot about 3 years of battery degradation)

I think such technical questions would be better answered at a Leaf forum.

It's almost like buying a fast depreciating German luxury money pit machine if you buy a leaf new. Wish Toyota starts working on a BEV as I think Fuel Cell is a flop.

Trollbait is right. If you are looking for specific/educated numbers, mynissanleaf.com is the place to go. There are some heavily data driven and engineering guys there also who would be happy to answer any number of Leaf related questions. Also, you will get info from those who have older Leafs like the one you are interested in and who experience real winters such as those typical of your region.

I'm not enough of a Leaf aficionado to be qualified to answer this. We have no winters here as you know them and our 30kWh battery Leaf with heat pump is too new and different and without any significant degradation to correct for to compare.

Maybe some other Leafers here can chime in.

No. There's a reason why so many former Prius drivers still call this their home or frequent watering hole.

$7k for a 2013 seems like a decent deal. May go test drive later today.

Is there a guess-o-meter like we have on the PiP for number of miles left in range?

Yes, but believe it or not, it is even less accurate. Miles guesstimated remaining can rapidly go up or down (on the same drive) based on speed, incline, etc. and still be way off. Most Leaf drivers rely on the percent battery capacity remaining.

Have fun on the test drive.

How many bars should I hope/expect to see on a 2013?

PriusChat is probably the best Hybrid/PHEV and like minded forum. That's why so many former and non-Prius owners still hang out here.

I'm over there as well by the same name, but only a small handful of posts.

Now that my 107 mile roundtrip commute has turned into 35 mile with a recent move, I'm also looking at the Nissan Leaf. Same as you I'm looking at a 2013 S for the mid model change. I'll take it in white. My sister had a 2013 S lease that she recently turned in. They took a whopping $4000 off the residual to entice her to buy but that still amounted to $13000.

My strike point is $5000. With 2013 500e's starting to come off their 3 year leases, I expect used EV prices to continue to plummet well into the summer before it stabilizes. I've already seen a few Leaf advertised below $5000 but they likely had battery 9 bars of battery. (The worse place to be since you need 8 to claim warranty)

I'm expecting 10-12 bars when I purchase mine. I will be able to suffer greater than 50% battery degradation and still be a useful commuter.

I'll be looking forward to your posts and how the car compares. I found the car no different than my PiP. It was just as slow. Smaller trunk. I didn't like having to press the lock button to open the door.

Turns out that the $7k one I wanted to look at had the old battery chemistry. Might still be interested but would probably need to be closer to $6k.

Yes. Very right 'arc'. Thin 'vertical' dashes denote capacity. 10 whites and two reds.

The thin HORIZONTAL lines that are long (left to right) indicate charge level. they are blue, tapering to white, going left to right in the picture.
