Brake system malfunction

    I'm Rachel and I am new to PC. I live in Nor Cal, Sacramento.

    My '08 with over 200,000 miles is displaying brake system malfunction lights - ABS, VSC, E-BRAKE. No problems apparent while driving but ABS is definitely not working.

    Would like to avoid going back to toyota service, so if I can get some suggestions on where to start looking, I would really appreciate it!

    My 2008 Prius has 240,000 miles and hoping it goes to 300,000! This forum has been so helpfully to my husband and I who are not mechanics but kids on a budget. So far we manage oil changes, coolant change, water pump and serpentine belt replacement and a year ago we replaced a front fender after I hit a tree delivering newspapers in the boonies, ya my bad!

    Engine light is on and car log has many codes don't know if they relate to Brake system, but here are the codes just in case,
    P0A80
    P0420
    P1150
    C1241
    B1650
    B1811


    If you have any expierence with the gen 2 brake system id love to hear it, Thx yall!

    I'm pretty clueless, just googling, get this:

    P0A80<weak hybrid battery cell
    P0420<catalytic converter below optimum
    P1150<air/fuel ratio sensor problem
    C1241<low battery (maybe 12 volt??)
    B1650<air bag related
    B1811<air bag related

    First one is worrisome. Could some of these be old news, never dismissed? How are you reading them? Maybe try dismissing them, see which come back.

    As to how you dismiss them, not really that sure. I'm inclined to just take it our dealership, hand them $80. For that they dismiss the codes, do a rudimentary diagnosis, and log it on their system. They're likely the best bet to get it right. Hopefully...

    These codes came from the dealership and while we plan on investing in a scan tool soon, idk how specific you can get it the interpretation of each code.

    My first thought is that it doesn't seem any apply directly to Brake system.

    Maybe a weak hv battery or 12v could be shutting down vsc system?

    definitely worth testing the 12v before taking it in. is your car covered under the extended brake actuator recall?

    +2 on checking the 12 volt battery. Those codes don't seem to have an obvious common root, so that's where I would start. Good luck on 300K! (y)

    Your first two codes are potentially expensive ones, the hybrid battery and the catalytic converter.

    First check your 12V battery. Search this forum for procedure and thresholds. The C1241 code is low voltage to the ABS.

    How do you know the ABS does not work?

    B1241 - +3 on checking the 12 V battery. For the same reason, those codes don't seem to have an obvious common root.

    After remediating the 12 V battery problem (charge up–not likely to solve–or replace) then clear all codes and see which codes return. Check also that both battery post connections are clean and tight and that negative earth connection from the battery to the car body is also clean and tight.

    As you and your husband seem like you are handy, you really need to get your own diagnostic tool. I'd recommend VxDiag for Toyota. Search Amazon and buy from a seller with good reputation and preferably local to you. Second option, which is slower to use, harder to install and has time out issues, is Mini-VCI, but is ok for occasional use and cheaper. Buy from the same place with same seller proviso.

    When I called Toyota about recalls they said according to my Vin my car has no recalls. I've read about the inverter pump recall and the steering wheel pin recall but never anew extended brake actuator recall...

    12v reads 10.5 in diagnostic mode, I think this called, press start without brake and flip lights three times goes to white screen.

    That's a dead 12v. The Prius is very particular about its 12v battery. A weak 12v can cause all kinds of unrelated codes. I think it's Toyota's way of supporting their dealers.

    Yes, my steering wheel buttons went out a year ago, cruise control, volume, Bluetooth and now it seems it can't detect the air bag anymore.

    As above, take care of the 12V problem first. That is low enough to cause spurious or fictitious warning codes on numerous other systems.
