Just so Mendel does not feel so emasculated....

I was cleaning up around the house about 15 years ago and came across one of my daughter's Nancy Drew books and I ended up reading all the ones she had on hand. I think I actually checked a couple more out of the library. You can blow through them pretty quick.

When I was a boy, it was Hardy Boys, Brains Benton and Chip Hilton books....Oh, the Power Boys also.

Many of my Hardy Boys were from the 1930s (hand-me-downs). And, even then, in the mid-1960s, they seemed pretty dated, but still a good read.

Seems like there was one other series....don't recall the name at the moment, but I think it was a bit darker, but still pretty good.

I did like Brains Benton better than the Hardy Boys.

Never went in for the Super Hero comics, though I did read Richie Rich, etc.

But, I REALLY liked the hot rod comics -- Big Daddy Roth, Rat Fink, etc. Had more than one T-shirt based on their designs.

Oh, and these hot rod designers all had their shops a short bicycle ride away from my house. Myself and many other "young dragsters" used to drive those guys wild riding through their parking lots. Big Daddy's Maywood garage was about a 12-minute ride away.

Man, the cars they customed....a bit different than a Prius.

Nope, I think I found the series I was thinking of though.

I did remember the first name of one prime character, as well as the location and was able to parlay that into the following:
    Bronc Burnett - Wikipedia

IF I remember correctly Bronc and his pals always had to deal with youthful cohorts who at times lied, cheated and stole. And neighbors who were honest, but did not always have enough cash to pay for groceries. All while winning baseball, basketball and football games.

Of course, maybe I am wrong. There could be yet another series I was thinking of....

I only read one Bobbsey Twins they were staying at some lodge in the snow -- apparently the Mystery of Snow Lodge.

Ya know what this thread reminds me of? A kid who picks up a discarded stick or an empty refrigerator box and invents all kinds of fun with it. LOL!

And for your average -- 63. I think I mostly grew up ... errr, I mean reached majority age reading Mad Magazine and building model cars. Which might explain a few things.

It rang a bell, but wouldn't come to me. Looked it up and I don't remember reading those but they sound like fun.

I'd never heard of this, so I looked it up. It's amazing how the Wikipedia entry starts.

Encyclopedia Brown is a series of books featuring the adventures of boy detective Leroy Brown, nicknamed "Encyclopedia" for his inability to spell "Encyclopaedia" properly.

Actually, looking at the format, I think my elder daughter might enjoy them. And she's always scratching around looking for something to read.

Being British and middle-aged, my young-detective thing was dominated by Enid Blyton's casually-racist Famous Five and Secret Seven books (spoiler: it was either the gypsies or the swarthy-looking gentleman who did it). I won't be recommending them to my daughters.

The last one, it says on Wiki, was published in 2012. So I should think so.

I'll look for them as ebooks: we'll be needing a lot to keep her entertained when we go away at Easter.
