Our 2012 Plug in Prius just got new shoes- the highly rated Michelin Energy Saver tires. Curiously, the mileage indicated for EV after charging overnight seems to have dropped. It had been in the 9's, which is not great, but the car has 46,000 miles, and it is winter here. Now, just after the new tires, it shows up in the 8's, and the weather is even milder. We run the tires at 38/35 psi front and rear, and I suppose I could go even higher, in an attempt to boost mileage. Does anyone have any ideas? My wife, who's car this is, wants to have the Toyota dealer look at it, but I think that will be a waste of money. We haven't taken any trips to check the overall mileage, but I am hoping the tires aren't really that much more rolling resistance!

i just put the same on mine at 50k. didn't notice any change, but it could that be break in is necessary.
these tyres a re so soft and quiet, maybe they need more time to wear in than the oem's.
i have tried airing up to 42/40 and didn't see any difference except the harsher ride.
i also haven't seen a reduction in hv mpg's either.

Being in the middle of winter I would recommend postponing the trip to Toyota until you get a warm day or two and have a chance to check your actual range, not just what the indicator estimates. I expect a full charge will give you 10+ after the car has been sitting in the sun on a temperate day, 60 degrees F or higher.

New tires have higher rolling resistance than worn ones. The thicker pliable rubber tread is softer than the underlying carcass. Pretty much no way around this, but go ahead and inflate to 40/36 which I use.

also, the tire radius may be affecting your odo.
