They're using EPA data for the most efficient numbers.

As far as manual pulse and glide versus computerized on a hybrid... manual with instrumentation of engine RPM would likely be best, but it'll very much depend on the strategy in use. Computerized pulse and glide will likely keep engine RPMs lower than optimum in some cases, to avoid the occupants noticing the engine running too loudly.

I have seen mine do it quite efficiently at 60-65mph, less so once you reach 70 mph as you are reaching the point where the electric motor is not strong enough to overcome wind resistance, but what appears to happen then is it uses the electric motor to reduce the power required from the ICE so still does a sort of pulse and glide but the glide is a hybrid glide to reduce the ICE requirement rather than replace it

    Reminds me of:

Then there was the 2009 'GreenHuman' Portland-to-Portland driving stunt: Portland to Portland Green Test Drive. What we did and why we did it.

VW went after the Prius tooth and nail only to come up short even before their diesel cheats were revealed. When customers get the Ioniq and Niro in their hands, the final integration and test will begin.

Manufacturers typically send 'early production' models to the USA for emissions, efficiency, and safety tests. These are used for Press demos but never sold. But there can be subtle differences found when the assembly lines ramp up. These delays suggests ...

“Come, Watson, come!' he cried. 'The game is afoot. Not a word! Into your clothes and come!'

Ten minutes later we were both in a cab and rattling through the silent streets on our way to Charing Cross Station.”

To be fair, they're using the EPA test data.

If you search fueleconomy.gov, the most efficient vehicle listed is the Ioniq Electric, at a combined city/highway rating of 136 miles per US gallon equivalent (25 kWh/100 mi).

If you exclude plug-ins, the most efficient listed is the Ioniq Blue, at a combined rating of 58 miles per US gallon (1.7 gal/100 mi).

Now, whether it actually meets that in the real world is yet to be seen.

thing is these driving stunts are good for headlines, but what really matter is joe average and the figures he gets on his commute or Julie average gets on the school / shopping runs (sorry for the stereo types),all they see is how many miles per gallon they get and how much it costs to run

all the EPA figures at that point are meaningless as they are a general measure to provide a rough and ready comparison

until we get enough vehicles of the type we are interested in on public sites like fuelly we cant have a good comparison easily, I know what mine does but that is on UK roads with UK spec 92ron petrol, not sure if the US petrol is the same spec, but you also have more ethanol in your gas than we do ( I think we get max 5% ethanol shortly to be 10%)

the one thing I am picking up here the last few days where we have got into the differences of the cars is that the eCVT seems to be more efficient than the DSG in town, but the DSG is more efficient on the highway? if so you need to know your driving profile to be able to choose the best drivetrain for you if you are only interested in economy, but few buyer have that as the main requirement

There was a shake up of Hyundai USA's upper management recently. Sales are down because Hyundai's line up is nearly all cars. The USA CEO was blamed, and let go for this.

The glide in this case is an electric one, and speed maintained. It's how I drove the gen2 at highway speeds; 'warp stealth' until the battery SOC drops, then push the pedal enough to bring the ICE on.

The 2016 average is 2mpg higher at 55mpg than the unfiltered average.

Not really when talking for the US market. The Ioniq does have the best EPA numbers. Then the cheapest trim is the Blue, and it is over $2000 less than the Prius. The Spark and Mirage might beat it on TCO, but are much smaller cars.

Then Toyota releases and sells the Prius Prime starting in November 2016. Sure the Prius Prime is a compact, plug-in so it won't meet everyone's requirements. Still, it has more total range, 640 miles, than any EV on the market. Around town in blended-EV and hybrid mode, the Prime beats every hybrid including the Toyotas. The Prime is why I'm not driving a 2017 Prius ECO.

FYI, here is the chart from the Dashboard summary:
    • Fusion Hybrid - market leader in January yet not mentioned in Hyundai advocacy. Speculation, I wonder if suppressing Prius sales led customers to the Ford dealer?
    • Prius Liftback - number two with no evidence of a recall forced, stop-sale like the one that suppressed October numbers. This begs the question did the Ioniq advocacy suppress Prius sales while waiting for Hyundai product?
    • GM Bolt - showing impressive gains in the new release, 3-4 month, the honey moon and just in time to meet the Ioniq EV in the market place.
The market will decide and in another two weeks, we'll have February sales.

only the bolt and fusion show upward trends this month, so lets see if it was just xmas lull when the February figures are in, people may be holding off waiting for the Ioniq to be come available but I don't think it would be that many

as I said we will not really now how this is going to play out for at least 6 months, we can make all sorts of assumptions but until we see longer term trends we can't really say

many people seem to not like the new styling, is that the reason for the drop?
people may be holding off due to waiting to see the Ioniq before committing to purchase either model?
people may be waiting to see where the US economy is going, bearing in mind the current president came into office in the month of that downward turn?

The Ioniq now has a higher mpg rating than the Prius Prime in hybrid mode.

The final EPA numbers aren't available yet for the Ioniq Plugin Hybrid.

The one Fuelly report for the 2016 Ioniq (hybrid I presume) has a 46 MPG figure based on 3 fillups from someone in the UK. Since the Ioniq has 3 differing versions (Hybrid, Plug-In and Electric) and Fuelly doesn't differentiate them well, the figures are likely to get muddled as more versions are introduced.

you really feel they'd be stupid enough to over claim a 2nd time ? almost on the heels of the last time they overclaimed mileage ?

We know Volkswagen had just settled with the EPA over failing to report an emissions defect, when they decided to cheat...

From my honest point of view, testing was not performed correctly and Hyundai chiefs/board have no perception of the results.

Or else...there is a Ioniq "for USA" and a Ioniq "for Europe". Very unlightly, since it would presume a 20% improvement in FE.

Apparently there are more users in EU, and we have data from 16 users with an average of 45 MPG (5.2 l/100 km):
    Benzinverbrauch: Hyundai - IONIQ - Spritmonitor.de

And then there is Prius IV with 98 entries and 52 MPG (4.5 l/100 km):
    Benzinverbrauch: Toyota - Prius - Spritmonitor.de

To be fair, IOINIQ will do better in next half of the year, since the average is only from winter driving, but even so, there is at least 10% difference to Prius (Prius winter ~4.8 l/100 km). Prove me wrong next year :D

Gasper: Is my math failing me or is the 4 divided by 52 more like 7.6% less for the Ioniq? Now if the Prius already had a summer period, that would put them mighty close, wouldn't it?

I'm glad we have competition in this space. Let people choose what suits their physique, their eye, the features they want and their bank account. Competition forces improvements.

If you get a chance, there were some wonderful shots of the Space-X launch this morning. Streamed live with shots from the second stage showing separation and first stage showing the landing of the booster.

    I beg to differ, fuelly shows 7 Ioniq, 3 x 2016 and 4 x 2017

Hyundai Ioniq MPG - Actual MPG from 7 Hyundai Ioniq owners

2017 show an avg 49.8 US mpg (59.8 UK mpg)
2016 show an avg 51.3 US mpg (61.6 UK mpg)

bear in mind most of these have less than 5 fill ups and engines not run in and the owners still learning how they work and how to get the best out of them

not trying to make excuses, just trying to point out possible reasons for it, but that puts them about 8% off their EPA figures in winter conditions
