No, not that President. Iceland's President, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson.

Iceland's president forced to clarify views on pineapple pizza ban | World news | The Guardian

Last week, answering questions from pupils at a high school in Akureyri, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson said his favourite football team was Manchester United and he was “fundamentally opposed” to pineapple on pizzas.
    ....
The president then went further, saying that if he could, he would ban the tropical fruit as a pizza topping.

Now, I have to admit, I'm not impressed by his subsequent backdown, I mean "clarification".

On Tuesday, a statement in English and Icelandic on his Facebook page titled A Statement on the Pizza Controversy clarified his stance, saying he liked pineapple, just not on his pizzas – but could not stop people who did putting it on theirs.

“I do not have the power to make laws which forbid people to put pineapples on their pizza,” Guðni, a former history professor at the University of Iceland, wrote. “I am glad I do not hold such power.”

I'm not glad at all that he doesn't have that power.

I don't just think people should be forbidden from putting pineapples on their pizza; I think they should be executed for it. If I ever become Prime Minister of Australia, my first move will be to send an ultimatum to Hawaii, asking them to stop this violation of all that is human IMMEDIATELY. If they fail to do so, I will declare war on Hawaii.

Pineapple is nice with custard. It is nice on its own. It is nice in a fruit salad.

It does not belong on a pizza. Nor, for that matter, pubs in the South of England, does it belong in a curry. Or anywhere with any meat. It is immoral and unnatural.

It's a slippery slope. What's next? Oranges with duck? Cranberry with turkey? Pork with apple?

    These people disgust me.

Iceland's President, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson......I had to cut and paste that because, honestly, who even knows where Iceland IS let alone who one of their leaders are?????....but that's a digression.
    Actually?
I used to run a remote satellite receiving station in the US base at Keflavik but since I was a mere contractor they always got a dot.gov weenie to fly over there and work on it while I stayed INCONUS.
I also used to work closely with a guy who spent a few years at an installation in Iceland that may or may not have monitored a network of sensors that we may or may not have liberally sprinkled the ocean with.........and from what he tells me, I'm not surprised that those people put pineapple on their pizza.

Frankly, it's wrong and it should be punishable internationally as a crime against humanity.

However (comma!!!!!) I would like to note that President Jóhannesson is not also opposed to putting seafood on pizza, which should be placed in the same class of international culinary crime....with the single possible exception of people who insist in classifying anchovies as "seafood."
In fact, President Jóhannesson gave seafood an endorsement as a potential permissible pizza topping!!!!

I cannot however castigate Iceland singularly for these crimes, because the last time that I was forced to travel to the US west coast, I found that there are people in states like Caly, Oregon, and Washington that openly admit to eating fruited pizza.....sometimes even with a non-tomato based sauce!!!

    ....it explains much.

Did you get to travel around Iceland much? It's somewhere I've always wanted to see. I'm tempted to try and get there next time I go to Britain. And my wife would be keen - one of her (many) postgrad degrees is about classical Icelandic literature.

If they are the sort of people who put pineapple on their pizzas, then I don't want to go after all. I shall ask my wife whether there are any references to pineapple pizzas in the sagas.

    Yes.

Anchovies are good. You cannot beat a good hairy fish.

But yes, things like prawns are not right on a pizza in my view.

However, I am open to negotiation on both of these issues. Pineapples, however, no. There can be no reasoning with those people.

There's a lot of it going on in Queensland too. Prawn and mango pizzas too. And they're all ... well ... Queenslanders. Coincidence? I think not.

I am happy you are all opposed to pineapple on pizza. That leaves more for me.

Technically I have not had a Hawaiian pizza since I found the Lost Dog Pizza company, (they lost the dog so thoroughly they are now just the Lost Pizza Company)

I now order a massive deep dish Kujo pizza. Lost Pizza Company | Get Lost in the Delta!

(they have a pineapple desert pizza, I never get it as a massive Kujo fills me up)

Pineapple on a dessert pizza isn't such an attack on all that is good: while I'm not convinced of the idea of a dessert pizza, at least we're not talking fruit and meat.

Dog pizza I haven't tried: the places I've eaten dog haven't really been good places for pizza. But I'd have thought it would be a bit too gamey for a pizza.

Of course, while pineapple DOES NOT go with ham, cheese and tomato, there are things it goes with perfectly.

    Especially apples and pens.

So when I was a student at Oklahoma State University, I had a bunch of 'friends' who decided to go out for pizza and beer. But I knew that any pizza I ordered would 'disappear' so I ordered an anchovy pizza . . . and had plenty to eat.

I have noticed when pizza are ordered for business meetings and the left overs are in the lunch room, pizza with pineapple seems to be a large portion. No one orders an anchovy pizza any more so I buy small tins and fix them myself. Especially salads which are made perfect with balsamic vinegar and the olive oil that comes with the anchovies.

After getting disgusted with commercial 'fruit in yogurt' that are often just sugar blobs with color and no fruit taste, I've adopted the practice of buying plain yogurt and small tins of pineapple and tins of whole cranberry sauce. Then I mix my own.

So lately, I've been buying the sweet yellow, red, and orange peppers and stuffing them with either canned salmon or sardines. Then top them with a layer of refried beans and sprinkle them with very hot pepper powder. Pop them in the microwave enough to 'a dente' the pepper and bon appetite.

I must admit I do like a thin crust ground beef and pineapple or shrimp and pineapple pizza. Much tastier than the ham combo.

hkmb - I agree with you. When I want to make sure I will always get some pizza I alway order anchovies.

Pineapple is good for one thing, and one thing only. Banana splits. and even there, it is the least of the ingredients. On a pizza? Sacrilege.
Next thing you know, they'll be putting nasty slimy spinach on pizza. Yuck.

Pizza isn't pizza without Italian Sausage and Pepperoni. You want vegetables? Eat a salad. Fruit? As mentioned, I get my fruit in banana splits. Seafood? again, sacrilege, unless you want anchovies or calamari, but that's not for me.

Wait, there's a second thing pineapples are good for... target practice.

    +1

I'll allow the occasional toad stool on my pizza, but generally speaking it's three or more meats (add bacon, please!) :D
I expect that pineapples are OK for target practice, but I don't buy them, so that's speculative.
Most of my target practice is on my property and I haven't found a good reason to introduce non-canned pineapples into that habitat.

I'm looking at shooting at an indoor range this summer, and I'm thinking that they won't let me use them there either.

    Oooh, no.

But yes to that. Pepperoni and anchovies make for the perfect pizza in my view.

To be fair, there's a lot to be said for pineapple in a trifle. Also, in the 70s classic (except in Sri Lanka, where inexplicably it is the height of fashion) the pineapple upside-down cake.

And, of course, in a nice pina colada by the pool.

It is good to see someone who understands pizza.

I'm not a gun person, but I always thought the fruit of choice for target practice was the water melon, as seen in The Day Of The Jackal and elsewhere.

I am very jealous of them indeed. As I said before, I'd love to go there.

As far as worrying goes, it's really up to them. They'll be OK if they follow the rules, but putting pineapple on a pizza there would now be like sneaking a bottle of whisky into Saudi Arabia. It might be tempting, but is it really worth the risk of life imprisonment or beheading or whatever?
