2005 Dead, will not start, screen dark, Mystery!!!

    My 2005 Prius will not start and the screen is dead. I am an experienced Prius owner who has replaced the dead battery before so I assumed that was the deal. Jumped started the car and it started right up under the jump. I entered the diagnostic mode and was checking the battery. Voltage was pretty good with the car running 14.4 V. I turned the car off to check the standing voltage. The car would not restart. I again hooked the cables up to jump but did not start.

    Replaced the battery with new yellow top. Will not start. Dome light on, fob works locks, red key flashing, headlights work, brake lights work every thing appears to be normal but all screen are blank and will not start . Voltage on new battery is 12.4 V. Tested voltage at the jump starting post and it was 12.4.

    Something is keeping it from starting. I checked the fuses but really did not know which one would relate to starting the engine. Looks to me like something is blown but I'm stumped. Anyone have a troubleshooting procedure?

    If your experienced then you should know never to jumpstart a completely dead Prius battery really bad things sometimes happen. Should have installed a new battery.
    Everything u list that works runs off the 12 volt battery it won't start because
    The inverter is not operational. May be damaged. Best bet is get a DVM and ohm. Out every fuse in the car takes 5 mins, check them all under the black fuse box under hood and by left knee inside the car. Pull the fuse out and check it. Fuse puller in cover. I don't think it's the 100 amp hard wired fuse
    As u would have nothing but check it anyway.

    I agree--start with checking the 100A DC/DC fusible link (in the engine room main fuse/relay block).

    DVM: digital voltmeter
    ohm: use the ohmmeter function of the DVM when verifying fuse condition

    When you say the "screen is dead" are you referring to the multi-function display (which is used to control the audio system and heating/AC) or are you referring to the combination meter (which contains the speedometer and fuel gauge), or do you mean both?

    If the multi-function display is dead, look at the 15A ECU-B, 7.5A ECU-IG, and 7.5A ACC fuses.

    If the combination meter is dead, look at the 10A GAUGE and 7.5A IGN fuses. I assume the 15A DOME fuse is OK since you say the dome light works.

    I further assume that both of these systems were fully operational prior to your 12V battery dying.

    Make sure the battery cables are tight, including the negative cable where it bolts to the body.

    If you find the fuses are good and the battery cables are tight, disconnect one battery cable for a few minutes to give the ECUs a chance to reset, then reconnect and see if that helps. I usually disconnect the negative cable at the body.

    12.4V measured at the new 12V battery is not a very good voltage measurement. A fully-charged 12V AGM battery should measure 13V. Hence I suggest you fully-charge the battery, although that is not the cause of the no-start issue.

    Nope had it happen on two Prius fixed them both am a Electronics technician

    Try to test the P.Con.Mtr Relay ( Gray color and same on H-LP relay)) on fuse box in Engine Room, should be 170 ohm and
    if u had K ohm then Relay has open circuit. Also,Do same way to another Relay on under dash (driver side)
    IG1 Relay if all fuse are OK. good luck.

    I bought a 2005 Prius a few days ago! Love it!! Fun toy to work on and great car to drive economically.

    Monday, I drove 3 hours to soquel ca just outside of santa cruz, parked it for 3 minutes came back to the car and it was smoking under the hood. The smoke was emanating from the driver side right where the inverter pump and fuse box are ( best I can tell )

    Now the Prius is on my friends trailer, on it's way back home to the foothills just past Sacramento.

    I'm going through the related threads to gain perspective and understanding of the Prius systems and building my 5 comment count before I post my situation.

    Probably the inverter coolant pump had a short and overheated (located behind the driver side headlight assembly.)

    He replaced the inverter coolant pump. It still overheated so he tore it down again and found the connector was not snapped in. This was in May 2017. By December the engine was trashed. He's probably driving a Tesla by now.
