Fantastic Prime Mileage

    I just got my Prius Prime Advanced on February 6, 2017. My EV range is 34 to 35 miles. I drive in town and some freeway in heavy traffic most of the time. My first tank of fuel lasted till 1238 miles, when I filled the tank with exactly 10 gallons of gas. The car is much more powerful than my 2012 Prius Plug-In. And it is much quieter and the build quality is much better. The car cost $1,000 more than my 2012 base model Prius Plug-In. Toyota has made a masterpiece. It has plenty of power for the traffic situations here in Southern California. And unlike the American cars and German cars I've owned in the past, it is completely reliable. What can I say, it's a sick world, and I'm a happy guy!

    Like you I'm getting great electric range. Not as much as you, but it is weather dependent. The key to getting great EV mileage is keeping the Miles / KWH high. That means driving carefully. Freeway speeds will degrade the mileage with 40-50 mph seeming to be the sweet spot.

    My first 1440 miles I filled up with 8.5 gallons.

    My EV is infinite, and it appears that my HV hill up may be 40-50 mpg and the hill down is 150 mpg, yielding a very nice 100 mpg. This is the western side of the Sierra Range foothills. I have yet to climb the peaks of either I50 or I80 yet. It's a shame that the past/ near history only go to 199mpg, as I would be interested in the actual number.

    that's good millage for hill driving. thanks for sharing.
    you may not like to hear this but just that 50mpg up hill and 150mpg down hill average is not 100mpg.
    average is 75 mpg.
    math calculation can be deceiving
    let's make a simple example:
    up hill distance 150 mile, 50mpg =3 gallon
    down hill distance 150 mile, 150mpg=1 gallon
    total distance 300 mile, 75mpg= 4 gallon
    it's 75mpg not 100mpg.

    You have to calculate a weighted average

    If up is 50 and down is 150 mpg, it takes 3x the fuel to go up as it takes to go down, so 4x the fuel for twice the distance, and 75 mpg overall
    If up is 40 mpg, it takes 3.75x the fuel to go up as it takes to go down, so 4.75x the fuel to go twice the distance and ~ 63 mpg overall.

    Ok I'll take your word for it, except, downhill uses nothing, and uphill in real life consist of continuous ridges, of which I add charge and use less energy whether am in EV or HV BECAUSE EVERY RIDGE CONSIST OF A SMALL DOWNHILL PORTION, at least in the Sierra range. Theory is interesting, but not reality.

    Easy enough to check if you have two trip meters:

    meter A1: zero the meter and note the mpg at the end of the one way
    meter B: zero the meter and note the mpg at the end of your complete trip
    meter A2: zero the meter before the return trip and note the mpg when you arrive where you started

    Does meter B = (A1+A2)/2 ?

    That's the spirit!

    By the way, a thought experiment makes it clear that a simple average will give the wrong answer:
    Consider 10 mpg to, and infinite back
    The simple average says that the total trip average is infinite MPG (no fuel use,) but we know that is not the case.

    Also, there is a 3rd trip meter that shows miles and mpg from power on to power off. Can only reset by powering off. Useful sometimes.

    Drove to the casino today: Uphill = 158.5 mpg/ 26 miles. Return: Proceeded onto Placerville to a "Taste of Europe" very authentic, cheap prices, good Beer and excellent desserts. To resume: After full L2 charge, continued East to Placerville. After meal, returned downhill to Citrus Hts and got: 199.9 mpg for 66 miles.
    I believe that last reading was really the whole round trip. I ran out of EV charge but surprisingly close to home I was driving in EV again with no numbers showing. ( state of charge ).

    This car is Unbelievable!

    I'm able to compare a 2014 BMW i3-REx and 2017 Prius Prime:
    • Prius Prime - Holy Carp what an under appreciated car!
    • BMW i3-REx - what a work horse. Around town, awesome. Highway is quite usable.

    As of this morning, I've had my previous prime advanced for 12 days. The mileage on EV is increasing a little bit each day. This morning my commute to work after parking in the garage, I had 10.1 miles left in EV mode. My 1st day driving it to work was 7.8. Looking forward to possibly getting close to 30.

    There are so many subtleties about this car that I like I can't even begin to start :) at 1st I did not like where the lock sensor was on the door handle because my 2010 had it slightly on top and I was used to that. Being on the front face of the pullout handle really makes it convenient for just rubbing your entire hand across it. Many little subtleties that makes this car much nicer. Could asleep
