Part of the deal when I bought my prime was getting the alarm system installed. They didn't have the alarm available when I picked up car, so I had do go back to the dealership after a couple weeks to have it installed.
Before the alarm was installed there was a little red icon that would flash on the dashboard. After the alarm was installed it's the same red icon as before. The thing is, I can't seem to test the alarm system. I bang on the windows as hard as I dare to, and shake the car as much as I can but I can't get the alarm to go off. I know I can press the panic button on my key fob to hear it, but that doesn't mean it works. And nothing seems different from before it was installed to after...
Does anyone else have an alarm in their prime or Prius? Can you verify it works without causing damage? (n)

Lock the car with a window rolled down, then reach in, unlock via the interior latch and open the door, see what that does?

Only problem with that theory is what happens if the key fob is within range?

Is there no ultrasonic motion detector with this alarm system? Is this only a voltage drop system that simply detects the courtesy lights coming on when the doors are opened?

Is there no alarm system fitted as standard with U.S. supplied cars?

The flashing red icon is there because of the engine immobiliser that comes standard on the Prius Prime.

Also, Toyota alarm systems typically do not come with "glass breakage sensor" unless you specify (assuming it's offered) so the stuff that you're doing won't set the alarm off. You'll have to do what Mendel suggests and unlock the door from the inside of the car to simulate someone breaking into the car. That will set the alarm off.

@Primeinmountains , do this ^. Keep the fob away from the car after you lock it.

Alarm is not standard in US-spec cars - just an immobiliser.

Who steals Priuii? They have no sex appeal; they're just nerd mobiles.
Come on, and I live in Southern California, land of stolen cars. The gangs here go for Honda civics (3 attempts, 1 successful to steal mine) Acura Type R's (4 attempts to steal, 1 stripped interior and guages for $15,000 replacement). Both had alarms with remote warning. I should have bought a shotgun! Police completely useless, didn't care, and they NEVER followed up.
Remember the Prius Prime Advanced has stolen car locator included.
I don't know if the other models of the Prime have the same feature.

We had the security alarm installed by the dealer a few weeks after purchase. They installed an led indicator light below the driver's side dash, just to the right and slightly below the button for the gas cap cover release. It blinks blue when the alarm is armed, though we haven't verified if the alarm works.

Is that the KARR alarm system instead of the Toyota alarm? I have the KARR alarm. The horn also beeps lightly when armed and disarmed.

Am surprised. Alarm with internal ultrasonic movement sensors has been standard on pretty much all cars in the UK AFIK for many years. Must only cost a few pounds to the manufacturer. Remote locking sets alarm as well automatically. (Have to use a physical key to lock without setting alarm.)

Yeah it's mostly focused on the theft of the vehicle rather than the contents of the vehicle. I can't speak for the U.S. but in Canada, the engine immobiliser became standard on most models except the cheapest ones beginning in the early 2000s (but of course today, it includes all models) with the "theft deterrent system" usually coming standard on the top model of each line. Again, they don't include a glass breakage sensor AFAIK but given that it hasn't been an optional accessory for a number of years now, maybe they've included it?

We also don't have double central locking that the UK has.

Our dealer installed security alarm is Automate model AM1.5 and the little instruction booklet says OEM Upgrade Security System. It arms and disarms with the Prime remote control and also with the door handle touch to lock/unlock feature. I believe there's a separate dealer installed glass breakage alarm which we didn't get. I'm not really sure of the value of the alarm system because here in the big city, we mostly seem to see window break-ins to steal stuff left on seats and less outright theft of vehicles.

(n)So I do have the Toyota VIP RS3200 alarm. I tried the suggestions to trigger the alarm, but still no luck. When the car locks the LED dashboard lights up for 30 seconds then starts flashing reassuringly (as the manual says it would do). With the fob away from the car I can pound the windows and shake the car all I can, but the car just sits there silently mocking my attempts to trigger it. I then tried to leave the window open a bit, locked the car, and walked the fob away. When I snuck back and opened the lock from the inside ( without the fob) the door just blithely opened. When I habitually tried to lock the door to go get the fob, my car refused and rudely displayed "window open" on the dash. I haven't heard a single warning chirp yet.
My relationship with my car was fine unti the VIP RS 3200 came into the picture..
Over the weekend I will have someone lock me in the car and see if anything happens when I try to get out.
