Many years ago, I tried Facebook and blew a gasket when it scraped my e-mail to pull all the e-mails into 'friends.' I was livid because I wanted more control over who would be a 'friend' so after deleting my account and waiting 60-90 days, my 'bwilson4web' account finally disappeared. It was as if I'd stepped in something sticky and Facebook picked up everything and wouldn't go away.

So last year, I picked up Facebook one more time and it had better account management. I could control who I would make 'friends' and limit it to those I really knew. Sure, it tried to volunteer their "friends" as contacts but it was easy to put them away and keep my circle down to 30 real members. I had some measure of control. So I tried the iPhone App.

Initially, OK, then after the last IOS upgrade, the regular Facebook messages broke and I was prompted for a new "Messages" App. I do not like Apps that suggest another App but HOLY CARP!!! Facebook was at it again, scraping my telephone contacts list and phone numbers!

It was not obvious but I was able to suppress the phone number collection (I think) and then delete "Messages." For good measure, "Facebook" App is mostly gone except for a 'Settings". But once again, Facebook left a bad taste in my mouth.

SPAM and robot callers have all but killed land lines. We were paying $30/mo to have 2-3 junk calls each evening. Cell phones were so much better that I often wondered if the cell phone companies were helping the telemarketers with land line numbers.

Sorry to be a buzz kill but the abuse of the Internet to make it into one back-to-back commercial just pisses me off.

I don't understand why people need Facebook. I don't have an account, and have zero want to get one. The only excuse I hear with any reason is because they can connect with people far away. Well, that's what email/phones are for. Why do I care what you eating for lunch 3000 miles away? Send me an email and catch me up on what's important. I feel that most people just ignore most of the updates because there is so much noise anyways.

I left Facebook about 3 years ago. Best decision I made. No politics and I actually have people call me to see what I have been up to.

I see Facebook as a quickie, throw-away web page that allows readers to leave comments. A place for ad hoc threads for 'friends' so I don't have to worry about bot abuse.

I have family members, so my FB account (never at all very active) has been dormant for over a year.
My relations ensure that my life is sufficiently documented.
I also have a Twitter account that I never check.

Better to have and not need......

I'm on another side of the fence. For me, it's a tool, although it's a very frustrating one at times.

Got out of Facebook after a few "connections" from women I knew from the distant past. Including one who decided sending nude photos of herself to me would spur me to "connect" with her.

I get. These women were 40-something and had been through divorce. But, I was then, and thanks to getting off Facebook, still am married.

Funny thing, the photo sender was a year ahead of me in High School and did not give me the time of day. The others were all women I had dated in college.

a lot of small businesses seem to use Facebook as a website, which i find frustrating, since i'm not a member.

A year or so ago, I was getting a haircut and the lady barber was chatting about her 'no good neighbor' who seemed to have many boyfriend visitors. As I looked around the waiting chairs, I silently counted how many men wanted to ask for the neighbor's phone number.
Facebook is better about letting me choose my 'friends'. Other than deleting pretty much all of the stranger requests, not really a problem. But one surprise was a 'friend' who instead of using the message system, dropped a note on my timeline.
That is sad but understandable because there is so much HTML fluff today. The worst are the auto-play videoes so my laptop audio is turned off unless playing my content.

Was the barber getting commissions or advertising fees?

You can turn off that capability. I haven't done so because I haven't yet had problems, but I know lots of people who do have it turned off.

And don't get me started on auto playing video advertising. I'll just say that those are the best way to guarantee I won't buy from that advertizer.

Ugh, my Firefox at recently developed a nack for starting the video's audio without starting the video. So no way of stopping it.

The video ads that didn't just play, but kept scrolling the page to them is why I have adblock on Priuschat.

Still not on facebook. Considering signing up my cat because friends and family use it.

I use a browser plugin called Facebook purity to take charge of what FB shows and how it shows it. Facebook HATES this plug in. F.B. Purity - Clean up and Customize Facebook They have to keep updating the plugin to counter FB's counters to it.

They are "smart" at trying to filter out that they deem as background noise. Sometimes they filter something they should not and other times they miss what they should filter. :(
