sorry, but i have never heard of a password in a prius before. can you give us more info?

    1) which battery did you replace?

    2) what is the exact message on the screen, can you post a picture?

I may be crazy, but have you spoken to Toyota Corporate Tech Support regarding your problem? Their intervention coupled with a good Service Department Mgr and Master Mechanic might be an option. BTW, who performed repairs to battery originally?
What specifically did they repair/replace? Where's the paperwork? What's their warranty? I would sure ask Toyota Corporate about best solution and what kind of assistance (financial etc) they could provide. You don't ask; you don't get! Is the car from a CARB, ZEV state which mandates 150,000 mile 10yr warranty on LATE MODEL hybrid batteries. I wouldn't guinea pig it unless I had lots of time, money, support and a backup car!

Interesting! I've never heard of a password for a Prius either, @bisco. Could it have something to do with being a Model I? Those are REALLY rare and were not sold to the general public.

No, I have never had a G2 with a lithium battery. I have removed a couple failed Hymotion lithium plug in conversions and put back to stock.

A new 12v battery wouldn't be too expensive to replace anyhow. It has been known to cause random issues when they start going low, but is harder to diagnose because it doesn't run a starter motor.

As for the hybrid battery, I just don't see how it could fail so quickly if it really was a brand new genuine battery. Does the battery fan turn on even though it's not hot?

I got a call back from the shop.
They ARE NOT doing lithium replacements.

    Seem like knowledgeable, honest folks.
We spent a while "talking shop" on the phone.

Easy to get confused when you start learning something new and are bombarded with so much information.

Taylor of Taylor Automotive was trying to design lithium based HV batteries for Civic and Prius back when he was producing the ReInVolt rebuilt NiMh batteries (I had one in my 2004 Prius). I asked him about those efforts after he sold ReInVolt to Dorman and the effort had been put on the shelf.

@Aaron Vitolins posted a link to a company that's in the r&d phase, will be interesting if they can get it off the ground.

Hi guys! Sorry for joining this thread kind of late, but I'm facing the same decision... a $1635 Lithium ion replacement for my 2006 Prius or a new or remanufactured NiMH. I'm on my SECOND hybrid battery replacement... the last time I got a third party refurbished NiMH battery and the dealer installed it... 1 year warranty and it lasted 13 months. That battery is still in it and is currently failing... so two questions:

    1. I live in Kansas but want to drive it to Texas for the replacement (it's cheaper, and I'm delivering the car to a friend there to keep for a while). I have the warning lights on and the red triangle of death. It's a bit sluggish to accelerate but otherwise is behaving fine. What are the chances that I'll be able to drive it the 10 hours to my final destination with the car as is?

    2. When I get there, Austin Hybrid Battery has offered a remanufactured NiMH for $935 with a 2-year warranty (pretty sure it's not a Toyota brand... if that matters) or a remanufactured lithium ion for $1635 with a 4-year warranty. Do we have any more information about these batteries at this point? What would you guys do?

Thanks so much for your help!!

    welcome!
the chances of making it there are 55%. as far as a replacement battery, if you want one that will last 10 years, look for new oem.
if you want one that will last as long as the warranty, or as long as the company that sells it is in business, whichever comes first, get another rebuilt.

    all the best!(y)
